When the ethnology study programme was divided into the bachelor and the master degree programmes, the bachelor programme focused on the basic knowledge of the field of ethnology; first of all on Slovak and central European “traditions” and then also on other foreign “traditions” of the discipline. the history of ethnology is an integral part of the instruction. Ethnology is one of the oldest disciplines taught at the Bratislava university. In the past, it was incorporated in the structures of other departments. The independent ethnology department was formed forty years ago and the courses on the history of ethnology have always been a compulsory part of the studies. Attention has always been paid primarily to the history and personalities of the 19th century, depending on each lecturer’s preferences. nowadays, teachers focus on the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The editing, exhibition, societal, educational and building activities of this period determined the position and social prestige of ethnology in its further development. The time during the undergraduate studies is an important period for all ethnology students as they acquire knowledge which was not accessible to them during their high school studies. We believe that from the methodological point of view, it is important to study the history of the discipline in order to consolidate one’s knowledge within the framework of the little acknowledged social sciences.
