The importance of manufacturing in the economy nowadays depends on its international competitiveness and innovative activity, which allows the modernization of the material structure of production and improvement of the position in global value chains. The necessity to intensify efforts to improve the technological advancement of Polish manufacturing is an issue that regularly appears in the literature and business practice. The need to increase the capacity of Polish manufacturing to cope with global competition was also emphasized in the Strategia na rzecz Odpowiedzialnego Rozwoju (Strategy for Responsible Development) adopted by the Council of Ministers in 2017, in which the postulate of reindustrialization is one of the objectives. Bearing these conditions in mind, and the fact of regional diversity of the industrial potential in Poland, the aim of the article is to analyse the distribution of medium and high-tech manufacturing in the Polish economy. The study uses the method of critical literature analysis and statistical research. Based on a literature query, the idea of the territorialization of development and the role of manufacturing in the modern economy is presented. Regarding the diagnosis of the spatial distribution of manufacturing in Poland, the analysis of gross value added in the voivodeships system of division was used. The last part of the research focuses on the results of an empirical study which was carried out for the selected divisions of manufacturing in terms of changes in the number of entities and the level of employment. The results indicate an increase in the number of entities and a relatively constant employment level of technologically advanced divisions. The location quotient emphasizes the concentration of sold production of high- and medium-high-tech industries in the Dolnośląskie, Śląskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships.

Znaczenie przetwórstwa przemysłowego w gospodarce zależy obecnie od jego międzynarodowej konkurencyjności i aktywności innowacyjnej, która umożliwia unowocześnienie struktury rzeczowej produkcji i poprawę pozycji w globalnych łańcuchach wartości. Konieczność intensyfikacji działań w kierunku poprawy poziomu zaawansowania technicznego polskiego przetwórstwa przemysłowego to zagadnienie regularnie pojawiające się w literaturze i praktyce gospodarczej. Potrzeba wzrostu zdolności polskiego przemysłu do sprostania globalnej konkurencji została także podkreślona w przyjętej przez Radę Ministrów w 2017 r. Strategii na rzecz Odpowiedzialnego Rozwoju, w której postulat reindustrializacji stanowi jeden z celów szczegółowych. Mając na uwadze te uwarunkowania oraz zróżnicowanie regionalne potencjału przemysłowego w Polsce, celem artykułu jest analiza rozmieszczenia przetwórstwa średnio i wysoko zaawansowanego technicznie w polskiej gospodarce. W opracowaniu wykorzystano metodę krytycznej analizy literatury oraz badania statystyczne. W oparciu o kwerendę literatury przedstawiono ideę terytorializacji rozwoju i rolę przetwórstwa przemysłowego we współczesnej gospodarce. W odniesieniu do diagnozy przestrzennego rozmieszczenia produkcji przemysłowej w Polsce, posłużono się analizą wartości dodanej brutto w układzie województw. Ostatnia część opracowania koncentruje się na wynikach badania empirycznego, które przeprowadzono dla wybranych działów przetwórstwa przemysłowego w zakresie zmian liczby podmiotów i poziomu zatrudnienia. Otrzymane wyniki wskazują na wzrost liczby podmiotów i stosunkowo stały poziom zatrudnienia działów zaawansowanych technicznie. Iloraz lokalizacji podkreśla koncentrację produkcji sprzedanej wysoko i średnio-wysoko zaawansowanej technicznie w województwie dolnośląskim, śląskim i podkarpackim.

This paper explores the multifaceted concept of social development within economically advanced countries, delving into the implicit assumption of technological advancement as a cornerstone for well-functioning economies. While digital technologies shape broad socio-economic processes, a counterfactual perspective emerges when examining social development through the lens of (nature-based) social welfare. The analysis encompasses the coexistence of advanced technologies with disparities in living standards, resource appropriation mechanisms impacting both populations and environments, and the underexplored negative consequences of techno-economic development. The article addresses the visible and invisible impacts of information technologies, emphasising issues of labour exploitation, resource extraction practices, and the environmental costs of digital production. Critically assessing optimistic scenarios, the paper suggests the need to broaden discussions beyond the positive aspects of technology, considering the challenges for sustainable welfare posed by exploitative labour, resource extraction, and inequitable benefits. The study advocates for an inclusive approach to (nature-based) social welfare, encompassing marginalised issues and proposing concepts such as degrowth as potential solutions to the rapid development of information technologies and their societal implications.
