Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony został działalności prawosławnych misjonarzy rosyjskich na kontynencie północnoamerykańskim. Zakres chronologiczny badań objął okres od końca XVIII do początków XX wieku, a więc czas ponad stuletniego kształtowania się struktur Kościoła rosyjskiego w Ameryce. Dziedzictwo misji prawosławnych przedstawione zostało szczegółowo w oparciu o życie i działalność arcybiskupa alaskańskiego i północnoamerykańskiego, przyszłego patriarchy Moskwy i Wszechrosji Tichona (Biełławina). Motywacje, program działań, metody, a nade wszystko rezultaty aktywności podejmowanej przez tego duchownego na obszarze Stanów Zjednoczonych przeanalizowano na tle potrzeb, potencjału rozwojowego i oczekiwań tamtejszej wspólnoty. Głównie jednak skupiono się na kaznodziejskiej i organizacyjnej płaszczyźnie działań Tichona oraz ocenie ich rezultatów w kontekście rozprzestrzeniania się prawosławia na całym olbrzymim terytorium Ameryki Północnej.

This article is devoted to the activities of the Russian Orthodox missionaries in North America. The chronological scope of the study covered the period from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century, that is the time of the over-century-old evolution of the structures of the Russian Church in America. The Orthodox mission heritage is thoroughly presented basing on the life and work of the Archbishop of Alaska and North America, the future Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Tikhon (Bellavin). Motivations, activities programme, methods, and above all, the results of activities undertaken by the priest in the area of the United States – were analysed against the needs and expectations of the development potential of the local community. However, the present author focused her main attention on preaching and organisational level of Tikhon’s activities as well as on the evaluation of their results in the context of the spread of the Orthodox Church throughout the huge territory of North America.
