The subject of the article is the analysis of the archaic and obsolete vocabulary in Jan Pawel Woronicz’s 19th-Century Hymn do Boga. The vocabulary of the poem can be divided into two groups: 1)Vocabulary cited by Doroszewski’s Dictionary of the Polish Language (SJPD) - 77.4%; 2)Vocabulary not cited in SJPD - 22.6%. The majority (69.3%) of vocabulary cited by SJPD are obsolete, archaic and historic words with relevant qualifiers in the Dictionary. Only a handful (8.1%) of words have the expressive qualifier literary. The vocabulary not cited by SJPD constitute a separate group. Only a few of them can be found in Linde’s Dictionary. Those words were created by Woronicz himself, whose poetry, in Klemensiewicz’s words, „is abundant with neologisms”. In Hymn do Boga the poet used a number of neologisms, not cited by the dictionaries of general Old Polish and contemporary Polish. Klemensiewicz mentions them in vol. 2 of his Historia języka polskiego.

The subject of this article are the names of the Bible and the saints derived from the Legends of Gdansk, by Jerzy Samp, a scholar of literature and culture of Pomerania. They are one of the stylistic vocabulary, willingly exploited by the writer. These names have been analyzed in terms of their artistic functions. The analysis shows that they give more elevated style and they are a part of artistic expression as well as assessment and evaluation.

Spotkania Jana Pawia II z przedstawicielami środowisk nauki i kultury świadczą o tym, jak bardzo wysoko ceni ich rolę w budowaniu tożsamości narodu rozumianego jako wspólnota osób. Ich zadaniem jest troska o właściwy rozwój nie tylko intelektualny, lecz także duchowy i moralny Polaków. Ich wysiłek powinien być ukierunkowany ku pełnemu przeżywaniu i doświadczania człowieczeństwa. Z analizy papieskich wypowiedzi wynika, że istnieje związek między wiarą a kulturą, między tym, co narodowe, i tym, co religijne, gdyż przez wieki wartości chrześcijańskie odnajdywały swoje odzwierciedlenie w dziejach polskiej myśli. Jan Paweł II wielokrotnie nawiązuje do myśli personalistycznej. Personaliści wyróżniają trzy wymiary kultury rozumianej jako działalność człowieka: poznawczy, praktyczny i twórczy. Odpowiada im zakorzeniona w tradycji europejskiej aksjologiczna triada: prawda, dobro i piękno. Zdaniem papieża życie duchowe koncentruje się wokół tych trzech podstawowych wartości. Jan Paweł II zachęca rodaków, aby dbali o rozwój nauki, szukali prawdy o swej historii, kulturze i narodowej tożsamości. Inspiruje słuchaczy, aby cenili sztukę, która otwiera na doświadczenie Boga i kierowali się takimi wartościami moralnymi, które mają na uwadze obiektywne dobro każdej osoby ludzkiej.

During pilgrimages to Poland, sixteen times John Paul II met representatives of universities, researchers and representatives of other fields of Polish culture. From the analysis of the delivered speeches comes a conclusion that culture is a constitutive element of the community of the nation. The Pope emphasizes the primacy of the spiritual over the material culture and sees community of the nation as a communio personarum. He points out that culture allowed the Poles to preserve their national identity, when Poland was not on the map of Europe in the years of partition and occupation. John Paul II appreciates those culture- making factors that allow the Poles to experience a sense of national community. He draws attention to the knowledge of history, development of science and education, works of national art and religious and moral issues. He refers to the Latin culture, and thus confirms the association of Polish culture with the Western European tradition.
