The teachings of Holy Father John Paul II constantly remind us of the importance of human dignity. The anthropological focus of John Paul II is an essential element of his thoughts. The human being in the image of God, has a unique, inherent value. It was always God’s plan that men, despite being creatures, would freely participate in God’s inner life - in Love. The dignity and value of humanity is established in creation, but is fully realised and expressed in the redemption of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the author of this article presents the person who faces modern challenges, but in the light of the ministry and teaching of Pope John Paul II. This is a direct introduction to the new international scientific journal “The Person and the Challenges: The Journal of Theology, Education, Canon Law and Social Studies Inspired by Pope John Paul II”. This journal is being published at the Theology Faculty, Section in Tarnów of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow since 2011 - the year of the beatification of the Holy Father John Paul II, which also implies and guarantees, that it will become a platform for exchanging ideas, evaluations, reports and studies on the person and contemporary challenges in the light or having regard to the teaching of John Paul II.

Theologians of the so-called new moral theology aiming to renew moral theology developed a theory of a fundamental option identifying it as the ‘new’ paradigm o f morality. They accused the moral theology’s tradition, to a certain extent rightly, of too strong an emphasis on the objective dimension of the moral action ignoring its subjective dimension on which, in their opinion, the quality of choices a person makes depends. However, reflections upon the origins of the fundamental choice from the perspective of Christian tradition demonstrated that St. Augustine, St. Thomas, St. Alphonsus Liguori in their writings pointed out the subjective dimension of morality, emphasising the importance of conscience, freedom and moral decision in the Christian life. The moral and theological reflections o f these authors contain references to a deeply personal aspect of moral activity since, in fact, a moral act ‘is bom’ deep within a person and is directed towards the ultimate aim. It is in the fundamental moral decision, understood as the life’s essential direction towards God, where a relation towards subjective not only objective dimension of the moral order is clear, since such a decision ultimately comes from the depths of the acting person’s freedom.

The article deals with the issue of moral aspects of a priestly ministration. The author, having reached various philosophical and theology sources, shows the priestly service through man’s acts of love. Such love is the answer to the man’s needs, that is, the realization of the precept of love. In relation to God, our love is perceived through the prayer of adoration and sacrifice.

My analysis is designed to show some areas of discourse around questions about the value of human life and the responsibility for human life. In search of answers to these questions we refer to integral anthropology with personalistic profile. In the light of such anthropology human value and dignity of human life is not a matter of the contract or situational needs, but based on the objective foundation of humanity, natural inalienable human rights and universal principles to protect the value and dignity of human life. Our analysis is an attempt to show from the perspective of research in certain areas of discussion about the value of human life and the responsibility for human life.

Artykuł jest próbą przybliżenia rozumienia osoby w ujęciu Gabriela Marcela. Swą refleksję określa on jako filozofię konkretną, w przeciwieństwie do myśli abstrakcyjnej.

The article is an attempt to understand what Gabriel Marcel means by a notion of the person. He defines his ideas as concrete philosophy opposed to abstract philosophical thought. His core idea is a human as an incarnated being, who received the flesh body but was also integrated into a certain reality such as a family, tradition, and broadly perceived spiritual heritage. The implication of his philosophy is an appeal to create our own personal humanity by progressing from the desire to possess towards the desire to be and to become the person. Drawing the right conclusions from Marcel’s philosophy brings on significant inspirations for modern pedagogics and education.
