The article presents various aspects of the tourist offer and the size of demand in the Romanian Carpathians. Although the infrastructure and entertainment opportunities there are not as developed as the country’s Black Sea or balneal spa regions, the mountains do offer a variety of colourful ways to spend time, including walking, resting, winter sports, treatment and rehabilitation, trails, alpine activities, and speleological tourism, sometimes accompanied by a rich history. The potential for tourism afforded by the region’s nature is presented at the beginning of the article, followed by the anthropogenic features of the area. The second part discusses the infrastructure, including the currently existing equipment in the mountains. The trails and ski lifts that enjoy such great interest are described, and the situation in alpine tourism is discussed in the light of comparative data including the actual number of people lodging (both Romanians and foreigners), the number of lodgings, the length of visit, and so forth. In the last year of the research, 2006, the region saw clear growth in earnings from tourism. We can hope that, given the country’s current political situation, which is improving the country’s image, the growing care for the level of service quality, and the promotion of Romania as an international tourist destination, the growth will continue in the future.
