The aim of the article is to raise and discuss, according to contemporary research findings, the most important reservations regarding the concept of sustainable (harmonious) tourism development as well as the barriers to the implementation of its principles in practice. The author points to ambiguities in the interpretation of the term ‘sustainability’ and, as a result, the methodological implications for tourism studies including the problem of measuring and evaluating ‘sustainability’ in tourism development processes. In addition it considers the social hostility towards limiting consumption in tourism and the growing climatic, economic and political instability at tourism destinations hindering its implementation of the concept of sustainability. In conclusion, the author proposes a new paradigm for sustainable tourism which does not directly relate to the imperative of harmonious interconnection between differing development goals and values in tourism.

Epistemologiczna refleksja nad turystyką powinna z kolei ułatwić przejście do problematyki metodologii badań nad tą dziedziną.

In his article, the author presented his reflexions on the ontological and epistemological grounds for tourism research, which are an important part of their methodological characteristics. It seems that particularly in this field of studies on tourism there prevails a significant regress both in Poland and abroad. The author proposes an arranged on the theoretical grounds programme of research of tourism. As a starting point there is taken into account in it the ontological approach where there is postulated search of an answer to the basic question concerning the essence of tourism. Later on, he proposed adoption of the epistemological perspective concerning the possibilities and directions of scientific cognition of tourism – in the scope determined at the ontological level. Th e epistemological reflexion about tourism should, in turn, ease the shiftto problems of the methodology of research of this domain. It is considered that there is much to do in this area. In the so far carried out research, scientists have been often using the methods borrowed from other disciplines, with a simultaneous lack of more definite attempts to integrate them.

The article presents the essence as well as various models of academic explanation and the explanatory value of understanding, indicating their usability and limitations as regards understanding why and how tourism functions. Particular attention has been paid to the epistemological dimension of tourism research, as well as its new directions. The author has referred to two models concerning the epistemological aspects of tourism research where the focal point is the category of ‘truth about tourism’. These have been presented in two articles by John Tribe.
