The lexemes tovaryšství and tovaryšstvo, nowadays peripheral, were atteseted in the phonological variants tovařišstvie/tovaryšstvie, tovařišstvo/tovaryšstvo in Old and Humanistic Czech. They were commonly used and had a number of meanings: ‘association, (spiritual) connection’ – ‘association, community, grouping’ – ‘fellowship, friendship, togetherness’ – ‘company, companionship’ – ‘companions’, etc. On the basis of the archiseme ‘link, connection’ and the shift from abstract to concrete, the meaning ‘ornament consisting of more (especially heterogeneous) parts’ also developed.
