From the time of its introduction, the concept of ‘transition’ has effected a tectonic shift in our understanding of post-socialism. In the process which has taken place during the last couple of decades after the collapse of East European socialist regimes, it has become transformed from one of the signifiers of the political and social change which occurred into a cornerstone for thinking, analyzing and predicting the future of post-socialism. Furthermore, in this article it is posited that all the political and social processes occurring in the ex-socialist countries are defined in relation to transition as an all-encompassing form of post-socialist experience. Relying on the discursive theory of Ernesto Laclau, this article attempts to consider together the usually separated questions of epistemology and ontology, and to ask what is the connection between scientific origins of the concept of transition and its political legitimacy. We claim that transition is a “sutured“ structure composed of various social experiences and political strategies, which naturalizes and universalizes the contingent power struggles that are taking place and will take place in the future of post-socialist countries. Therefore, severing the existing bonds between transition and the actually existing post-socialism is a necessary precondition for creating a more complex and productive understanding of the societies of East and South East Europe.

In this paper, “transitology” as a new direction in political and economic science is discussed. The concept of “transitology” was developed based on theories of economic transformation from a centrally planned economy towards a market economy. In the context of the questions what might the alleged research domain of this new discipline be, and what tools are available for applying transitology, the author addresses some issues with regard to the ontology and epistemology of social economic research on the transition in Central and Eastern Europe.

This article discusses the role of research and academic knowledge in the field of practices that form cultural education in Poland. Cultural education is shown here as a practice strongly embedded in the processes of socio-cultural reproduction and a space structured by the mechanisms of the post-1989 transformation of Poland. Reluctance to an in-depth diagnosis of local communities, ‘offertism’ (production of cultural events for everyone), ghost viewers are just a few most problematic features of contemporary cultural education in Poland, as revealed by studies conducted since 2016. From the first programmes of Polish culture animation, surveys and reports on cultural education to the use of research in practice, the component of knowledge in cultural education is analysed and recognised for its dialectic (based on theory and practice) and critical nature (based on the reflexivity of transformative practice). Moreover, the analysis leads also to questions about the transformative nature of action research and its actual political impact.
