Some knowledge of the publishers’ strategy is useful for understanding the translation process. Besides literary translators, the publishing industry uses translators whose specialty is hardly known. There is therefore no specific training in this area, yet. This paper presents their work and suggests the introduction of courses in intersemiotic translation. Such courses would help translators specialising in the non literary sector of the publishing industry to deal with the layout of the book, insofar as it bears on the translation process. This paper also hopes to convince the layman to revisit the image of this profession and thus to better appreciate the work of all translators.

W artykule omawiana jest kwestia stylu i gramatyki jako istotnych składników, zapewniających naturalność brzmienia tłumaczonego tekstu specjalistycznego. Kwestie stylistyczno-gramatyczne w ujęciu tekstowym (dla różnych typów tekstów) mogłyby stać się podstawą do stworzenia gramatycznej stylistyki porównawczej dwóch języków w jej aspekcie translatorycznym. W tym układzie jednostką przekładu specjalistycznego byłaby kategoria tekstowa. W artykule przedstawiona została historia rozwoju pojęcia oraz metodologia analizy kategorii tekstowych na przykładzie kategorii inpersonalności w językach polskim i rosyjskim.

In teaching of specialized translation not only terminology, but also stylistics plays great role. And if terminological problems are the central object in the dydactisc of specialized translation, then stylystic matters are regarded as peripheral. It appears however, that stylystics could be the key to the naturalness of translation, especially if it concerns translations from native language into foreign one. I don’t mean here traditional functional stylystics, but text stylystics and text grammar in comparative and – first of all – translatological dimension. Assuming textual character of specialized trasnaltion, I propose including into the model of specialized traslation such a translational unit as a text category. Due to this approach translation of specialized texts complies with contemporary text-oriented translation studies. The dynamics of the term in Russian linguistics is analyzed, the author also proposes to develop on this base comparative stylistic grammar for translation purposes.

Partie d’une recherche plus ample sur les aspects culturels de la traduction des contes, notre étude aborde la question des dénominations des personnages de ces textes envisagées comme culturèmes et unités de traduction. Nous identifions ici une série de traits pertinents à même de circonscrire la signification complète de ces noms afin de mettre en place un outil analytique utile tant au traducteur qu’au traductologue menant des recherches descriptives sur la traduction des contes. Nous complétons le modèle d’analyse proposé par des exemples tirés du domaine franco-roumain.

As part of a more extensive research on the cultural aspects of the translation of folktales, our paper tackles the issue of folktales characters’ names from the perspective of their status as culturemes and translation units. We identify here a series of cultural and linguistic features. Their role is to highlight the full meaning of these names and thus provide a relevant tool both for the translator and the researcher undertaking descriptive translation studies. Our suggested analysis model is completed by examples of translation from Romanian into French.

Artykuł ukazuje proces decyzyjny tłumacza oraz stosowanie strategii i technik przekładowychw tłumaczeniu na język angielski współczesnej polskiej powieści kryminalnej pt.,,Seans w Domu Egipskim”. Głównym celem studium jest przeanalizowanie problemów tłumaczeniowych, takich jak kulturemy lub idiomy oraz rozważenie luk pragmatycznych, które pojawiają się w procesie tłumaczenia powieści z polskiego na angielski. Dynamiczna i kontekstowa analiza strategiczna poprowadzona zgodnie z metodologią ARTS (badania w działaniu) oraz oparta na minimalistycznym modelu kompetencji według Pyma z 2003 roku, prowadzi do wniosków na temat istoty wiedzy kulturowej, świadomości znaczeń kulturowych zakodowanych w kulturemach, a także założeń pragmatycznych w komunikacji międzykulturowej. Wnioski z przedstawionego studium przypadku podkreślają mediacyjną rolę tłumacza podczas „strategicznej gry tłumaczeniowej” oraz w pokonywaniu barier komunikacyjnych wynikających z różnic kulturowych.

The study explores the translator’s decision-making process and implementation of strategies and techniques in the English rendition of the contemporary Polish detective novel entitled Seans w Domu Egipskim. The main objective of the study is to analyse various translation problems, such as culturemes and idioms, and consider pragmatic gaps that may occur in their rendition from a language of limited diffusion, like Polish, to a dominating language, like English. Dynamic and contextualised strategic analysis conducted within the ARTS methodological framework and based on Pym’s minimalist competence model (2003) leads to observations on the nature of cultural knowledge, awareness of cultural meanings encoded in culturemes and pragmatic assumptions in intercultural communication. Conclusions from the conducted case study emphasize the mediating role of the translator in “playing the strategic translation game” and overcoming communicative barriers imposed by the cultural distance.

W artykule uzasadniam włączenie do modelu przekładu tekstów specjalistycznych takiej jednostki przekładu, jak kategoria tekstowa. Dzięki takiemu podejściu translacja tekstów specjalistycznych zostaje wpisana w tekstocentryczny model współczesnego przekładoznawstwa, a naturalność brzmienia tekstu przekładu przestaje być wymogiem niejasnym. Opisuję dynamikę rozwoju pojęcia kategoria tekstowa w językoznawstwie rosyjskim i proponuję stworzenie gramatyki stylistycznej w aspekcie translatorycznym.

В статье обосновывается правомерность включения в модель перевода специальных текстов такой единицы перевода, как текстовая категория. Благодаря такому подходу трансляция специальных текстов вписывается в текстоцентрическое направление современного переводоведения, а естественность звучания перевода перестает быть размытым требованием. Рассматривается динамика развития понятия в современной российской лингвистике и предлагается создание сравнительной стилистической грамматики в ее переводческом аспекте.

L’objectif de cette étude est d’offrir un aperçu du concept de culturème, de le définir et d’établir son champ sémantique. Les acceptions du terme dans la théorie du culturème et du transfert linguistique, dans la sociologie de la culture et la sociolinguistique nous permettront de le délimiter semantiquement d’autres concepts apparentés et d’identifier son acception traductologique. L’étude des oppositions binaires : culturème-traductème, culturème-connotation, culturèmenéologisme, etc. nous a permis d’identifier ses traits : la monoculturalité, la relativité du statut de culturème et l’autonomie du culturème par rapport à la traduction. Afin de faciliter le choix du procédé de traduction convenable, nous esquissons une classification des culturèmes.

The purpose of this article is to give further details about the concept of cultureme (the culture-bound term or phrase), its definition and semantic field. The significance of this term in the theory of the cultureme and in the theory of linguistic transfer, in the sociology of culture and in sociolinguistics offers the opportunity to set the semantic limits of culturème and to identify its significance in translatology. The binary opposition cultureme-translation unit, cultureme connotation, cultureme-neologism etc. is thought to be a powerful tool to elucidate the fundamental characteristic of the cultureme: monoculturality and its relative autonomy of translation. A classification of the culturemes is suggested to facilitate the translation process and to choose the most appropriate method of translation.
