Background. The authors attempt to discuss the issue of tourism development in protected areas on the example of the Powidz Landscape Park. Contemporarily protected areas, thanks to their exceptional landscape values, are important attractions, stimulating tourism development, and thus may form a major potential for the advantage of many municipalities. On the basis of literature analysis, the notion of lake tourism was explained. Material and methods. The authors applied a general method known as ‘desk research’. The study was based on an analysis of the existing material in the form of data and information publicized by individual municipalities of the Powidz Landscape Park. Results and conclusions. The results prove the important role of protected areas in tourism development. In protected areas or their immediate vicinities, tourism infrastructure develops, which is a reaction to the rising demand or an attempt to utilize the potential seen in the touristic use of the areas. The study has shown that lake tourism could be a topic of research from various points of view.

Lakes are important tourism attraction in many tourism regions of Poland as well as in the world. They play a key role in sport and broadly understood recreation, as they offer favourable conditions for practising various types of water sports, as well as the possibility to rest and at the same time, get away from the city noise. They have been popular since ancient times when wealthy Roman families visited lakes as their summer vacation destination. The aim of this article is to determine the level of tourism development and diversification on Lake Garda, located in the region of Northern Italy. Moreover, the study defines what lake tourism is and characterizes its individual types. At the same time, data collected by the regional statistical offices Regional Statistical Yearbook Lombardia and Sistema Statistico Regione del Veneto were used, from which data on tourist infrastructure and tourist traffic were obtained.

Jeziora stanowią ważną atrakcję turystyczną wielu regionów turystycznych w Polsce jak i na świecie. Odgrywają kluczową rolę w sporcie oraz szeroko pojętej rekreacji, gdyż oferują korzystne warunki do uprawiania różnego rodzaju sportów wodnych oraz możliwości odpoczynku i jednocześnie oderwania od miejskiego zgiełku. Cieszą się zainteresowaniem już od czasów starożytnych, kiedy to bogate rzymskie rodziny upodobały sobie jeziora jako cel swojego letniego wypoczynku. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest określenie poziomu rozwoju turystyki nad jeziorem Garda, położonym w regionie północnych Włoch oraz zróżnicowania ruchu turystycznego i zagospodarowania turystycznego omawianego akwenu. Ponadto w opracowaniu zdefiniowano czym jest turystyka jeziorna oraz scharakteryzowano jej poszczególne typy. Jednocześnie wykorzystano dane gromadzone przez regionalne urzędy statystyczne Regional Statistical Yearbook Lombardia oraz Sistema Statistico Regione del Veneto, z których pozyskano dane dotyczące infrastruktury turystycznej oraz ruchu turystycznego.
