Article describes the definition of "residential area" and presents an attempt of typology of the residential space, taking into account its specific attributes, raised by representatives of various sciences. Taken into account issues were: population- -administrative, functional, infrastructural, morphologicaly-historical, socio-cultural, legaly-ownership and economic. The selection of diagnostic features included the substantive-formal assessment and statistical features of the diagnostic indicators. There were selected 10 indicators used to determine the types of housing space by the method of typological Kostrowickiego adopted for the needs of the typology of the residential space. There were identified seven types of housing space, and each type has been assigned the city of Łód province with a particular type of residential space.
