Due to the changes taking place in the socio-economic sphere, including the expectations of members of the society, the idea of social responsibility is increasingly implemented at universities, including public ones. Therefore, the article is the result of the analysis to answer three questions: why can we talk about the social responsibility of the university, what this responsibility is and what types of activities are undertaken by selected public universities in Poland in accordance with conditions previously defined social responsibility. To achieve this goal, in-depth literature studies, analysis of the content of websites of universities, semi-structured and in-depth interviews with employees of selected public universities were conducted.

At present the dynamic environment force business organizations to actively search for new ways and methods to remain competitive. Due to this reason business organizations more frequently stress social initiatives, which present an organization as an active member of the community, which cares for employees, environment, and society. This article discusses whether principles of social responsibility being implemented at business organizations can be adjusted at universities as well. Social responsibility renders great challenges for universities that pursue to educate young people able to responsibly deal with social problems. The article analyses the concept of social responsibility and peculiarities of its application in education sector – universities.

The topic of sustainability has taken root in the world of science and business, and much has been said about introducing the concept to businesses or the construction industry. Much less attention has been paid to describing the proposed improvements in educational institutions, such as universities. The study aims to find space in both the employee and student environment to introduce the idea of sustainability, not only in terms of green buildings but also in the concept of work. The authors focused on identifying the most valuable benefits and the barriers that are most likely to hinder the process. They took Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Wrocław Tech) as the subject of the study. The entire study consisted of an analysis of university documents, as well as interviews with experts and students involved in university life. Taking into account the results of the analysis, conclusions were presented for further study.

Education has been and remains the strongest stimulus for social development, and its goal has always been to prepare young people for effective and responsible social and professional activity in various stages of life. The role of universities and other tertiary education insitutions is strategic in this respect. By working with young people in the final stage of formal education, these institutions should prepare them for supporting a sustainable development of society through a responsible and competent fulfillment of social and professional roles. A permanent reference to the needs and problems of the changing society, should be, in addition to a high level of academic teaching as well as research and teaching activity, a priority for university.

Edukacja była i pozostaje najsilniejszym stymulatorem rozwoju społecznego, a jej celem pozostaje niezmiennie przygotowanie młodych ludzi do skutecznej i odpowiedzialnej aktywności społecznej i zawodowej na kolejnych etapach życia. Rola uniwersytetów i wyższych uczelni jest w tym zakresie strategiczna, bo współpracując z młodymi ludźmi w ramach ostatniego etapu edukacji formalnej, powinny przygotować ich do wspierania zrównoważonego rozwoju społeczeństwa poprzez odpowiedzialne i kompetentne pełnienie ról społecznych i zawodowych. Priorytetem dla aktywności uniwersytetu, uwzględniającej kształcenie na poziomie akademickim i działalność naukowo-badawczą, powinno być stałe odniesienie do potrzeb i problemów zmieniającego się społeczeństwa.

This article attempts to analyze the social responsibility of selected higher education institutions in Poland. The authors concluded that university social responsibility, in particular due to the convergence of assumptions, constitutes a practical dimension for implementing the principles of sustainability theory. The main objective of the article was to answer the following research questions: did Polish universities adopt the concept of social responsibility, in what areas and by what methods and tools it is implemented. The above questions were subordinated to the content of the article. In connection with the aim of the article, the initial part of the discussion was based on an in-depth analysis of the literature of the subject and in the second part, there were used the methods of examining the documents and analyzing the content of websites of selected universities in Poland.

W artykule podjęto próbę analizy społecznej odpowiedzialności wybranych wyższych uczelni w Polsce. Autorki wyrażają pogląd, że z uwagi na zbieżność założeń koncepcja społecznej odpowiedzialności uczelni stanowi praktyczny wymiar realizacji zasad teorii zrównoważonego rozwoju. Głównym celem artykułu uczyniono natomiast udzielenie odpowiedzi na następujące pytania badawcze: „Czy polskie uczelnie przyjęły koncepcję społecznej odpowiedzialności?”, „W jakich obszarach oraz za pomocą jakich metod i narzędzi jest ona realizowana?”. Powyższym pytaniom podporządkowano treść artykułu. Wstępną część rozważań oparto na pogłębionej analizie literatury przedmiotu, a w drugiej części posłużono się metodą badania dokumentów oraz przeanalizowano zawartość witryn internetowych wybranych uczelni wyższych w Polsce
