The text shows how the popular dailies of the 1920s and 30s, the so called “red press” helped to create the legend of the mid-war Warsaw. It investigates the editorial strategies and their role in disseminating urban legends. Additionally, significant attention has been devoted to the city topography in “Express Poranny”.

The text narrates the story of the printed edition of Andrzej Słowaczyński’s vaudeville Chłopiec studukatowy, which was the first to include the golden duck legend. It reconstructs the cultural and topographical context of the 1830 performance in Teatr Rozamitości in Warsaw (Variety Theater), and traces its phonological paradoxes. The vaudeville parodied Ferdinand Raimund’s Chłop milionowy, and today it remains a valuable testimony of both urban and regional folklore. Additionally, it exposes the social-spatial perceptions of the 19th-century Varsovians. Paradoxically, Chłopiec studukatowy owes its resulting commercial success to the literary, albeit cursory interpretations of the legend which followed.

This “anthropological report” investigates a phenomenon which has not so far been analyzed but which seems by all means worthy of attention of the Warsaw culture researcher. The authentic figure of Black Roman is presented in the context of urban legends and contemporary mythological practices. It appears to emerge at the intersection of the Internet cultures and real urban space.

The rebuilding of Poniatowski Bridge in the years 1945–46 was a symbolically meaningful act for both the national propaganda of the times and the postwar Warsaw. The city was in ruins and so its potential as the country’s future capital was questioned by many. The reconstruction process became legendary owing to its main figure Józef Sigalin – one of the chief managers of the Bureau for Rebuilding the Capital (Polish: BOS) and later, during Stalin years, its main architect. His story is related in the collection Nad Wisłą wstaje warszawski dzień... (ed. 1963). Narrated within the framework of initiation myth, the story reveals its characteristic elements: the unfolding of the enterprise, the idealistic portrait of BOS and the enthusiastic ideal of People’s Poland. All these elements formulate the carefully constructed founding myth, whose demystification is the purpose of this article.

The presented article identifies and compares several shared motifs of urban legends in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. The legends are classified into following thematic groups: 1) mysterious narratives and encounters with preternatural creatures, which are neither helpful nor harmful; 2) mysterious signs and encounters with preternatural creatures which cause death or other harm to the participants of the story; 3) mysterious signs and encounters with preternatural creatures which help people; 4) summoning and invoking of ghosts; 5) criminal stories — murders and assaults causing bodily harm with or without motive; 6) scary stories — parodies. Analyzed parallels between particular narratives documented in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic confirm shared folkloric substratum which points out to both their universality and international distribution.

Zwierciadlana zagadka (Mirror’s riddle) is the only science-fiction novel by Jadwiga Łuszczewska who is known primarily as an author of historical novels and improvisator. The present story uses the legend of the basilisk and the efforts to bring it back to life. Analysing Zwierciadlana zagadka through the prism of the urban legend, a phenomenon described in the literature and folklore research in the second half of the twentieth century, allows to read it as a record of the late nineteenth century fear of modern discoveries related to the sphere of human memory − capturing images in photography and on video tape.

Jakub Kazimierz Haur in his encyclopedia Skład abo Skarbiec znakomitych sekretów oekonomiej ziemiańskiej (Kraków 1689) in the chapter devoted to chronometers quoted an anecdote about the 15th-century astronomical clock in St Mary’s Church in Gdańsk. The anecdote bears the traits of a recurring motif, which appears in various places and times. It is a kind of urban legend, being a verbal folklore genre, which has so far been considered only in relation to modern times. The clock became its hero due to the important role it played in the city space.

Jakub Kazimierz Haur w Składzie abo skarbcu (Kraków 1689) w rozdziale poświęconym chronometrom zapisał anegdotę o XV-wiecznym zegarze astronomicznym w kościele Mariackim w Gdańsku. Anegdota ta ma cechy motywu wędrownego, występującego w różnych miejscach i w różnym czasie, co charakterystyczne jest dla legendy miejskiej jako gatunku twórczości folklorystycznej, który dotychczas rozważany był jedynie w odniesieniu do czasów współczesnych. W artykule podjęto próbę interpretacji znanej w Europie opowieści jako legendy miejskiej. Zegar stał się jej bohaterem z uwagi na ważną rolę, jaką odgrywał w przestrzeni miejskiej.

The main aim of the text is to discuss a conception of conspiracy theory as narration which draw a parallel with gossip and urban legend as far as its features and functions are concerned. The author chooses the example of the false flag operation which concerns September 11 attacks and describes it as a unique category of myth which legitimizes actions taken by – for instance – the ruling class. The author builds her conceptual frame on the Malinowski’s theory of myth and its function – she tries to prove that it can be still valid in contemporary anthropology.
