The text reflects on photographic methods of documenting the city. The paper is parted into four sections: the first presents the issues surrounding documenting, the second discusses historical examples of urban documentary, the third analyses the modern tendency of construction and, finally, the last fourth section introduces examples of contemporary art practice. Written with regard to the concepts of François Soulages I will discuss, among others, the following projects: The Inventory (Inwentaryzacja) by Ireneusz Zjeżdżałka, A Sky over Warsaw by Juliusz Sokołowski and The Other City (Inne miasto) by Wojciech Wilczyk and Elżbieta Janicka. All examples focus on different aspects of documentation: they allow preserving in a viewer’s mind the lost past, create a contra-image of a city or reveal the unseen and forgotten fragments of history.

The article discusses the current practices of commemorating the 1905 revolution in Łódź. The changes taking place in the city’s memory policy are conditioned both by the loss of memory of the events from a century ago and by changing political factors in the post-transformation period. The city is a paradigmatic example of a post-industrial city in Central and Eastern Europe facing an identity crisis. Narratives formulated ‘from above’ compete with those created ‘from below’. While the former are based on the construction of a utopian, capitalist city of success, the latter claim the history of the people of Łódź. Revitalising the memory of the Revolution of 1905 plays a key role in these negotiations, contributing to a revision of the post-transformation amnesia about the city’s working-class past.

In this paper I analyse the ways in which the traditions of the old Lvov are reconstructed and incorporated into the fl ow of culture. I do so using as an example the works of three young Ukrainian artists: Olya Kravchenko, Uliana Nyshchuk-Borysiak and Ostap Lozinsky. Special attention is devoted to a project called “10 х 10 сто wIkon Львова”, in which the artists focus on the painter’s iconographic interpretation of selected events, legends and stories from city’s history.
