This article concerns a special position of a veteran in the Polish constitutional system. The Constitution states that the Republic of Poland shall take special care of veterans of the struggle for independence, particularly war invalids.. The study describes axiological and historical basis of privileges of veterans. It was also discussed, how this issue was regulated in former constitutions and what assumptions were adopted in the course of preparatory work on the current constitution. A doctrinal understanding of the analyzed institution was described, basing on the literature of the subject. Reflections of the author are also focused on the basic issues related to understanding the duty of care of veterans in its subjective and objective shape.

All around the world the armed forces observe negative impact of stress experienced by soldiers on their psychosocial functioning. If you create the system of aid to veterans and their families, you must take into account the needs. The empirical study conducted by Wojskowe Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej in 2013 has showed, that 31% soldiers returning from Afghanistan suffer from different symptoms of emotional disorder (it certainly is not neutral to the functioning of their families), 14% note worse relations with spouse(s)/partner, 14% note worse relations with children. The study has confirmed that the severity of these problems correlates with the degree of exposure to traumatic situations. You must note that some of the soldiers informed about the positive effects of soldiers’ deployment on their family relationships, spouse(s)/partner or children.

Wskutek charakteru współczesnych konfliktów zbrojnych i prowadzonych w ich wyniku operacji powstał „problem” nowej grupy społecznej, której zwyczajowo nadano mia-no „weteranów”. Ponadto, mając na uwadze cel utylitarny – wykorzystanie założeń estońskiego systemu opieki do określenia podstawy zmian jakości funkcjonowania systemu opieki nad weteranami w Polsce –przeprowadzona została analiza SWOT omawianego systemu.

Due to the nature of contemporary armed conflicts and the resulting operations, the “problem” of the new social group, which has traditionally been called “veterans”, was born. It was a reasonable duty of the states to provide assistance to injured and wounded (damage to physical and mental health) soldiers returning from military operations abroad and their families. The introduction of the Act of 19 August 2011 on Foreign Mission Veterans has initiated the possibility of building a system of care for veterans in Poland. As it is strived to create the right care system, it is important to analyze, how other countries have solved this problem. Therefore, the cognitive goal of this publication is the identification and explanation of the assumptions of the functioning of the veteran care system in the Republic of Estonia.

The purpose of the paper is an analysis of the representations of the cultural memory of the Great War in Paul Bailey’s novel Old Soldiers. The discussion will focus on the metaphorical representation of the futility myth (laughter) and the psychological representation of the crisis of masculinity (shame). The laughter of the fool has obvious connotations with the Book of Ecclesiastes, yet, as the analysis will prove, the depiction of the memory of the first day of the Somme battle through the prism of laughter has an important predecessor in Ted Hughes’s poetic sequence Crow. The attempts to escape the memory of cowardly conduct will be set in the context of the psychology of shame, which will allow deeper insight into the construction of the antihero in British literature about the Great War.

The purpose of this case study research aims to bridge gaps in the current research by exploring how both veteran and nonveteran adult and higher education (AHE) learners make sense of their educational journey and identity, in and out of the classroom, during their first-year experience (FYE) course at a community college (CC) in the Southwest region. Combining critical incident technique (CIT) and narrative inquiry, the researcher is able to investigate veteran and nonveteran AHE learners’ personal critical incident narrative testimonies to make sense of individual identity and values. Relevant literature on the topic of FYE’s and transition for veteran and nonveteran learners underscore potentially problematic issues in the current scholarship. The theoretical framework from which this research was undertaken, methodology, findings and discussion reveal how nonveteran and veteran AHE learners identify a ‘third side’ or common ground in 1) the fight to pursue AHE, 2) the negotiation of new roles and 3) the influence of family on identity. To conclude, implications for future research and conclusions to advance understandings about veteran AHE learners have been offered. Ultimately, participant responses reveal common or ‘third sides,’ and how these ‘third side’ spaces contribute towards a collaborative learning environment in an FYE. General experiences of transition into the higher education setting for veteran and nonveteran learners are also shared in the findings.

Materiał i metody: W badaniach wzięło udział 60 osób: w grupie badanej 30 żołnierzy - weteranów (28 mężczyzn i 2 kobiety) i 30 żołnierzy nieuczestniczących w misjach, stanowiących grupę kontrolną (28 mężczyzn i 2 kobiety).

This paper looks at the possibility of using former SMU GROM soldiers and other special forces soldiers to enhance Poland’s national security and defence capabilities. Particular emphasis has been placed on the skills and combat experience of soldiers, as they constitute a valuable base of qualifications that could contribute to ensuring national security, once they have retired. Based on the thesis that the state does not take sufficient advantage of well-trained former SMU GROM soldiers, the paper refers to the broader debate on the desired systemic solutions that rest on the observation of the experience of soldiers after the end of their military service. The other aspects that have come under scrutiny in the paper are the conversion process, issues of information security of SMU GROM soldiers, and suggestions for possible model solutions aimed at their effective use by the authorities to prevent emerging irregularities within the military community. For the first time ever, emphasis has been placed on the new social threats that can be found within the environment of special forces. These include the outcomes of uncovering special forces veterans, as well as the massive use of the Internet as a universal source of knowledge and exchanging information.
