We will examine the largely ethical vocation of Romain Gary's memorial writing project, which leads it to metamorphose itself into a literary tomb of the forgotten dead. We will then discuss, from a more narratological point of view, how this memory emerges untimely in the narrative and sometimes frees itself from it to signify the transcendent character of the name and the face. Finally, we will show that Gary goes beyond the somewhat naive vision of the memory as a mere recorder of events or images by associating it with the imagination to give it a poetic and counter-historical use.

In his essay L’effet de sourdine dans le style classique: Racine, Léo Spitzer analyzes attenuation mechanisms especially in connection with the face (gaze, eyes, mouth). How to approach the idea of face ? And how to use it in the analysis of classical theater’s language? We presume that the face systematically expresses deep emotions and is closely connected to the body and to this « bouillonnement intérieur » (inner excitement) that agitates the racinian heroes by pushing them to hide behind an anonymous, official or collective mask.

Dans son essai L’effet de sourdine dans le style classique: Racine, Léo Spitzer étudie les procédés d’atténuation plus particulièrement ceux relatifs au visage (regard, yeux, bouche). Comment aborder la notion du visage ? Et comment la mettre à profit dans l’analyse du langage du théâtre classique ? Nous postulons que le visage, étant au service de l’expression des sentiments profonds, est en étroite relation avec le corps même et avec ce « bouillonnement intérieur » qui anime les personnages raciniens tout en les poussant à se cacher derrière un masque anonyme, officiel ou collectif.

Artykuł jest próbą spojrzenia na książki Antoniego Kępińskiego, wybitnego psychiatry, z perspektywy komunikacyjnej i stylistycznej, której dotąd w omówieniach jego dzieła nie uwzględniano. Stanowi też rekonstrukcję obrazu świata człowieka i choroby psychicznej w dziele Kępińskiego, traktowanej jako efekt zaburzenia wymiany informacji między podmiotem a światem zewnętrznym. Kępiński w opisie choroby używał terminologii medycznej, lecz posługiwał się także prostymi metaforami i porównaniami, pozwalającymi lepiej rozumieć stan psychiczny chorego, co z pewnością przyczyniło się do popularności dzieła tego psychiatry wśród czytelników, którzy nie zajmują się zawodowo zagadnieniami psychiatrii i psychologii. Styl książek Kępińskiego motywowany był dążeniem do takiego mówienia o chorobie psychicznej i chorym, które nie redukuje choroby do jednej z kategorii znanych z obowiązujących klasyfikacji medycznych, co z kolei przywraca choremu podmiotowość.

The article attempts to insight into the books by an eminent psychiatrist Antoni Kępiński from a communicative and stylistic perspective that has been disregarded to this date. It also is a reconstruction of a man’s world image and mental illness in Kępiński’s work viewed as an effect of disorder in information exchange between the subject and external world. In his description of an illness, Kępiński took advantage of medical terminology, though also employed metaphors and comparisons allowing to better comprehend the mental state of the ill person, the two latter of which undoubtedly added to the popularity of his work among those readers who were not professionally related to psychiatry and psychology. The style of Kępiński’s books was motivated by the strive to write about the illness and the ill in such a mode so as not to reduce the illness to one category from among the valid medical classifications, which, in turn, restores the ill’s subjectivity.
