Konceptualizacja w procesie interpretacji wersologicznej (na przykładzie „Majowych wojen” Marcina Świetlickiego)

The text below is an attempt to reconsider the categories of interpretation within versological research. On the basis of the assumptions of literary constructionism, cognitive sciences and pragmatic philosophy, an endeavour is made to show the functioning of versification interpretation understood not as the realisation of standard reading paths postulated by the text and not as the reconstruction of "intentio auctoris" but as the reader’s creative activity inherently related to the individual, (auto)biographical reading experience and the autopoietic (from the constructionist point of view) process of meaning construction. By way of the example of the concept of syllabotonism an attempt is made to show the importance of personal experience and encyclopaedic (i.e. non-linguistic) knowledge in the process of literary interpretation, as well as the conceptual and constructivist nature of such versification “constants” as verse, meter, etc.

Tekst niniejszy stanowi próbę ponownego przemyślenia kategorii interpretacji w ramach badań wersologicznych. Opierając się na założeniach literaturoznawczego konstruktywizmu, nauk kognitywnych i filozofii pragmatycznej, staram się pokazać, jak działać może interpretacja wersyfikacjyna rozumiana nie jako realizacja postulowanych przez tekst ścieżek modelowej lektury czy rekonstrukcja intentio auctoris, ale twórcza aktywność czytelnika wpisana w indywidualne, (auto)biograficzne doświadczenie lekturowe i autopoietyczny (w rozumienu konstrukcjonizmu) proces budowania znaczenia. Staram się również (na przykładzie pojęcie sylabotonizmu) wskazać na rolę osobistego doświadczenia oraz wiedzy encyklopedycznej (tj. niejęzykowej) w procesie interpretowania literatury, jak też na konceptualny i konstruktywistyczny charakter takich „stałych” wersyfikacyjnych, jak wers, metr itp.

In this interview, Kacper Bartczak, professor at the University of Łódź, Americanist, poet, and translator, talks about creative self-awareness in the broader context of versification studies. The question of meta-reflexivity and its role in the works of literary scholars and poets is discussed first. More specific questions follow, including the conceptualization of the line in poetry and research, the role of the line in organic poetry and translation. Pragmatism (James, Dewey, Rorty, Shusterman, Nehamas), so important for Bartczak, and the role it plays in creative self-awareness is also discussed. Bartczak also comments on American literary theory and twentieth-century Anglo-Saxon poets (Coleridge, Stevens, Williams, Olson, O’Hara, Gizzi, Armantrout).

Wywiad dotyczy samoświadomości twórczej oraz jej odniesienia do kategorii wersologicznych. Rozmówcą jest Kacper Bartczak – profesor Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, amerykanista, poeta i tłumacz. Rozmowa koncentruje się najpierw na problemie metarefleksyjności badaczy literatury i poetów, by następnie przejść do kwestii szczegółowych; kolejno omówione zostają zagadnienia takie jak konceptualizacja wersu w optyce poetyckiej i badawczej, rola wersu w wierszu organicznym czy przekład wersu. Wypowiedzi stanowią też próbę zarysowania kluczowej dla rozmówcy tradycji pragmatystycznej (James, Dewey, Rorty, Shusterman, Nehamas) i jej roli dla twórczej samoświadomości. Recenzja omawia książkę Krzysztofa Skibskiego „Poezja jako iteratura. Relacje między elementami języka poetyckiego w wierszu wolnym”. Według autorki jest to nowatorskie studium wiersza nienumerycznego widzianego nie w perspektywie deficytu (regularności), ale poprzez cechy właściwe tej formie, a nieistniejące w innych systemach wersyfikacyjnych. Badacz z powodzeniem wykorzystuje zarówno narzędzia językoznawcze, jak i literaturoznawcze, tworzy także nowe konstrukty pojęciowe. Za klucz do odbioru wiersza wolnego uznaje lekturę wielokrotną (iteracyjną), związaną np. z przestrzennością formy, relacyjnością wersów, występowaniem elips wersowych i reminiscencji frazeologicznych.

The review discusses Krzysztof Skibski’s book “Poetry as an Iterature. The Relationship between Elements of Poetic Language and Free Verse”. In the reviewer’s opinion, it is an innovative study of non-numerical poem seen not from the perspective of deficit (regularity), but by the features peculiar to that form that is non-existent in other versification systems. The researcher successfully employs both linguistic and literary tools, as well as develops new cognitive constructs. Multiple (iterative) reading, connected with, e.g., form spaciousness, verse relations, presence of verse ellipses, and phraseological reminiscences are made the key to the free verse reception.

The article is a proposal for opening verse studies to the problem of presence, on the basis of Hans Urlich Gumrecht’s project of a nonhermeneutic humanities. The author presents the limitations of a semantically oriented versology, simultaneously pointing to the possibility of a continuation of formal-structural tradition of studies on verse, following non-semantic threads in the works of Polish theorists: Janusz Sławiński, Lucylla Pszczołowska i Teresa Dobrzyńska. Tomasz Różycki’s poem Panny nieroztropne [Foolish virgins] become an exemplum for the ensuing considerations, while two intuitions of contemporary poets inspire theoretical considerations. One is Eugenio Montale’s perverse thesis on the hopeless semanticity of poetry and Adam Zagajewski’s Nietzschean claim that versologists take care of fire rather than ashes, i.e., investigate living, aesthetically influential verse forms.

Artykuł jest propozycją otwarcia badań wersologicznych na problematykę obecności w oparciu o projekt niehermeneutycznej humanistyki Hansa Urlicha Gumbrechta. Autorka przedstawia ograniczenia wersologii zorientowanej semantycznie, zarazem jednak wskazuje możliwość kontynuacji formalno-strukturalnej tradycji badań nad wierszem, śledząc niesemantyczne wątki w pracach polskich teoretyków: Janusza Sławińskiego, Lucylli Pszczołowskiej i Teresy Dobrzyńskiej. Funkcję exemplum pełni wiersz Tomasza Różyckiego Panny nieroztropne, rozważaniom teoretycznym patronują zaś dwie przenikliwe intuicje współczesnych poetów: przewrotna teza Eugenio Montalego o beznadziejnej semantyczności poezji oraz nietzscheański z ducha postulat Adama Zagajewskiego, by wersolodzy nie zajmowali się popiołem, lecz ogniem, tj. badali żywe, estetycznie oddziałujące formy wierszowe.
