The article presents matters pertaining to the determinant factors critical to the effectiveness of communication of the specialist – non-specialist type. User guide can be regarded as a primary means of communication provided that specific elements of the communication scheme are taken into consideration, such as a specific producer and recipient of the text, with knowledge potential and capabilities making the so-called communication competence. A given recipient understands the text of a user guide first of all on the basis of language layer of a specifi c text, which is here the main knowledge expression and allows a recipient its reconstruction. Discrepancies in external and internal contexts of writing and reception of the text are compensated by specific efforts on the part of text's producer as a result of his/her specialist communication competence, expressed mainly in anticipation of receptive capabilities of potential user guide readers as well as skills of choosing the best means (both language and non-language) for the right expression of „user guide" knowledge depending on the specifics of communication circumstances.
