Kausalya Baisantri authored a Dalit woman autobiography in Hindi—the first to my knowledge—in 1999. The article draws on the ‘narrative self’ concept as the theoretical apparatus for the analysis of the text’s content and context. The history of the autobiography genre in Hindi overlaps with the beginnings and advancement of prose in pre-modern and modern literature in these languages, which developed at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Autobiographical motifs predominate Dalit writings, due mostly to the fact that Dalit literature per se is viewed both by the authors as well as by the readers as a strong manifesto of an exploited people’s struggle, voiced by the oppressed themselves with the purpose of enforcing social change, it is perceived as a weapon to fight oppression of the upper castes.

The article describes research and actions which the author has taken in the shelter for homeless women in Łódź. The main question is how this kind of procedure, which is applied in feministic and action research focused version of anthropology, is justified. This perspective is close to the critical science. The author analyses and describes how the shelter is functioning. She bases her observations on and relates them to Miranda Fricker’s concept of the hermeneutical injustice and other related notions, such as epistemological inequality, cognitive disability and discursive disability. The author discusses her own activities and puts emphasis on an agency, which characterises her research choices.

The essay is devoted to the life and work of Zofia Chądzyńska, with special focus on three manifestation of her intellectual activity: reading, writing, and translation, and their linguistic relations. The complicated post-war vicissitudes forced the writer to frequent changes in her way of life, and required an effort to adapt to the new reality. Chądzyńska did different jobs, and often changed her place of residence. The point of departure for the present discussion is her work at white-wash laundry in Buenos Aires. The laundry serves as a metaphor for moving from one linguistic space to another, and both spaces seem to be rigidly isolated from one another for Chądzyńska. The essay also refers to James Clifford’s On Ethnographic Self-Fashioning: Conrad and Malinowski. The anthropologist claims that each sphere of life is allotted to a different language: native, transgressive, and the language of restraint. The languages of both authors discussed by Clifford entered into various interferences, however, or replaced one another and created new connections. In Chądzyńska, it is definitely more difficult to see such relations, and her strong self-fashioning techniques reinforce the impression of radical transit from one language sphere to another. The author’s autobiography and her numerous autobiographical acts of expression also provide evidence for research in translation work, which in Chądzyńska can be analysed, for example, in the feminist context.

Jacek Bocheński’s ancient trilogy includes three novels – Boski Juliusz (1961), Nazo Poeta (1969) and Tyberiusz Cezar (2009). The study is an attempt to analyze the image of two women, supporting characters – Corinna and Julia the Elder. Bocheński described them as persons who are the cause of suffering and great pain for men related to them. At the same time, they are completely subordinated to the patriarchal system.

Na trylogię antyczną Jacka Bocheńskiego składają się trzy powieści – Boski Juliusz (1961), Nazo Poeta (1969) oraz Tyberiusz Cezar (2009). Szkic jest próbą analizy wizerunków dwóch kobiet, drugoplanowych bohaterek – Korynny i Julii Starszej. Bocheński opisuje je jako osoby będące przyczyną bólu i cierpienia mężczyzn. Jednocześnie są całkowicie poddane systemowi patriarchalnemu.

By sharing the experiences of women and the black community of her time, represented as a journey towards womanhood on stage, Afro- American playwright Ntozake Shange deconstructs the patriarchal structure of language, by pushing the boundaries of genres as she assembles prose, poetry and stage performance in a “choreopoem” capable of empowering and liberating the trajectories of the represented black women. The present study explores the semiotic and linguistic deconstructions of the patriarchal ideology in for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, aiming at a discussion of the author’s experimentalism with language outside instituted discursive paradigms regarding women. Considering that the concept of the liberation of the individual is strongly historicized in the play, the characters of the seven ladies are focalized as being tightly related to the feminist movement in North America in the seventies. Furthermore, the implications of ideological impositions and limited roles for women in society are analyzed.

This text is devoted to selected questions on the border of the ethnography of Łodź and research into women’s issues, and thus joins the trend of women’s urban anthropology. The author reinterprets selected sources, such as various types of writings and field materials from the archives of the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Łodź. Her aim is to reconstruct the local ‘herstory’ from the ethnographic-anthropological perspective. She therefore looks at certain aspects of the life of textile workers and locates them in the context of the perceptions of femininity and the work ethic around which Łodź’s image (stereotypical and auto-stereotypical) was created

The article presents partial fndings of the research on the cultural continuity of the Ukrainian minority with a history of displacement (operation “Wisła” in 1947) in Poland from the perspective of women. The presented sample focuses on the specifcs of cultural knowledge transfer on the example of practices of telling memories of displacement and of traditional women’s skills illustrated by the example of embroidery. These factors were chosen due to the twofold nature of cultural influence – through transfer of knowledge and skill. The changes of these practices over time (measured by generational change) reflect the overall transformations of the community itself, whose culture undergoes homogenisation as a unifed national canon.
