Noun distribution in natural languages

100%
EN
Previous research on word class distribution claimed that 37% of word tokens are nouns, suggesting that there might exist a certain regularity of noun proportion among human languages. To explore this possibility, we examined the proportion of noun and four other word classes within British and American English, and across seven languages in terms of different word frequency band. Results indicated that the noun proportion is evidently about or larger than 37%, and meanwhile increases with word rarity. Among frequent words, nouns increase as minor word classes decrease, whereas among rare words, the noun proportion remains a stable level.

Regards croisés sur l'adjectif

In this study, we offer an overview of the main issues addressed by Gaston Gross in his analysis of the adjectival category. Gross’s aim was to create an electronic dictionary of adjectives intended for automatic language processing. His research work focused on the search for criteria for the identification and description of the various subclasses of adjectives, as well as on the accurate description of adjectival meaning using the notion of “emploi”. We will discuss some key concepts of the Théorie des classes d’objets that have been applied to the study of the adjective. These include the notion of adjectival predicate and adjectival use (“emploi”). We will attempt to draw a summary of Gaston Gross’s achievements, while also discussing some critical issues.

86%
EN
The article is devoted to the Czech linguist Miroslav Komárek, both to commemorate his 90th birthday (which he unfortunately can no longer celebrate) and to provide insight into his theory of morphology and later morphological work inspired by it. The first part reflects morphology in the context of grammatical descriptions before Komárek, comparing them with the methodology of the Prague School’s functional structuralism. The second part shows that th Mathesius-inspired direction of grammatical description, from function to form, resonates with the conceptual efforts of the generation of the 1970s and their concept of academic grammar. On the other hand, it demonstrates the incompatibility of word-formational and morphological descriptions, an issue which was a part of Komárek’s morphological endeavors. The main part of the article analyzes Komárek’s most important conceptual morphological efforts, i.e. Příspěvky k české morfologii (Komárek 1978), the two basic pillars of which are the theory of word classes and word structure analysis. The last part shows the (non-) inspiration in several post-Komárek word-formational and morphological descriptions, especially in current projects which aim to create a new academic grammar of the Czech language.

Pragmatisierung der Syntax

This article presents the role of modeling in linguistics. It is used to recognize regularities in the language. Special emphasis was put on the linguistic analysis universal model of Józef Darski. The author of the paper has successfully applied it to the study of morphology and syntax at the dialectal level.
EN
The paper deals with two types of German and Polish echo-questions (so called Rückfragen and Gegenfragen) and their communicative functions. It will be discussed which linguistic means can be used to achieve these functions in both languages.
