In March 2020, in Poland were introduced regulations to limit the spread of the new SARS-CoV-2. The restrictions apply to the everyday life of people, they refer to maintaining social distance, moving outside home and the functioning of institutions. Many companies and institutions introduced remote work. Trade is moving to online shopping. In the face of these changes, what should the profession of family assistant look like, which has the nature of social service and its work area has usually been the place of residence of the family? The answer to this question is presented in this study. It includes recommendations on the scope and organization of family assistants' activities during the pandemic.

The Family Assistance Association DROGA [The Road] undertakes activities targeted at children, young people, and families who are in danger of social exclusion and substance dependence, and also who are in need of support and assistance as well as therapeutic and preventive influence. The basic idea is to work with the whole family, as the life situation of the child is a consequence of the functioning of the family environment. The aim of the article is to present comprehensive and systemic work with the family. The article presents centres led by the Association, which cooperate with children and their families (Ośrodek Wspierania Dziecka i Rodziny NASZ DOM, Punkt Przedszkolny „Aniołkowo”, „Dom Powrotu”, Ośrodek Profilaktyki i Terapii dla Młodzieży i Dorosłych ETAP) as well as actions necessary when optimising the targets (family assistance, regular team assessment of the child and family situation, thearapeutic and recreational camps, Parents Academy, Sensory Integration Club). The article also describes cooperation with other institutions functioning in local environment and the role of volunteering in the Assosiation. The Association has initiated and continued to develop various forms of support, taking into account the principles of complexity and individualization. In the article, the major centres and the main forms of DROGA’s activities are presented, as an example of good practice when assisting families with multiple problems.

The article deals with the issue of parentification, which involves reversing roles in a family in which the child acts as a guardian, partner, confidant to his/ parent or siblings. Requirements and burdens resulting from the role of an adult are usually inadequate to the child’s level of development and emotional abilities. The phenomenon of parentification has been characterized and its main aspects are presented based on clinical material from psychotherapy sessions of 20 people.

Basing on a nationwide statistical information the effects of changes that took place in the system of foster care after the introduction of the law on foster and residential care system were analyzed. Reference was made to the most important assumptions of the Act: strengthening of work with family in the environment, limiting the number of children under the supervision of courts and placed in foster and residential care system and independence of young adults leaving care system.

Na podstawie ogólnopolskich informacji statystycznych dokonano analizy efektów zmian, jakie zaszły w systemie pieczy zastępczej po wprowadzeniu ustawy o wspieraniu rodziny i systemie pieczy zastępczej. Odniesiono się do najważniejszych założeń ustawy: wzmocnienia pracy z rodziną w środowisku, ograniczenia liczb dzieci będących pod nadzorem sądów i umieszczonych w różnych formach pieczy zastępczej oraz usamodzielniania młodych dorosłych.
