The article presents young Żeromski’s fascination with the writings of Paul Bourget. Basing on the Polish writer’s journal entries concerned with Une crime d’amour and Mensonges one can trace an ambivalent attitude towards those psychological novels developed in the late 1880s. By young Żeromski’s standards Bourget falls behind other masters of prose he admires at the time, namely Turgenev and Dostoyevsky. Still, despite Bourget’s didacticism, the aspiring youth cannot refrain from fascination for the descriptions of characters, whose emotions so often so clearly mirror his own. There are at least a few plots (an aspiring writer’s ambitions in the great world, the memory of a love lost etc.) which could have caught Żeromski’s attention as valid attempts to capture experiences known to him as well. It is therefore the identification process that stands in the way of condemning the moralistic ambitions of Bourget and allows the French writer’s works to remain an important point of reference for the Polish witer’s upcoming writing endeavors.

W Niemczech powstaje obecnie bardzo wiele podręczników dotyczących twórczego pisania, a zwłaszcza autobiograficznego. Dużym powodzeniem cieszą się także zbeletryzowane autobiografie rodzinne dotyczące NRD. W niemieckich podręcznikach wyróżnia się dwie najpopularniejsze odmiany pisania autobiograficznego: pisanie terapeutyczne (inspirowane psychoanalizą) i literackie, artystyczne. Ich techniki coraz bardziej przenikają i inspirują się nawzajem, owocując nowymi metodami rozbudzania kreatywności. Twórcze pisanie może służyć celom prywatnym (np. pozostawienie potomnym symbolicznego spadku) lub być skierowane do szerszego odbiorcy – od celu zależy wybór metody. Autorka tekstu przedstawia najciekawsze aspekty podręcznikowych porad dotyczące m.in. motywacji pisania, optymalnych warunków pracy twórczej, technik pisania nielinearnego, aktywacji prywatnych zasobów pamięci, technik narracyjnych, kwestii językowych i stylistycznych. Zwraca także uwagę na istotny aspekt egzystencjalny pisania autobiograficznego – pogłębienie przeżywania życia.

Currently a huge number of manuals on creative writing, especially autobiographical writing, is being published in Germany. Also very popular are literary autobiographies about family histories connected to the former GDR. The German manuals distinguish between the two most popular types of autobiographical writing: writing as therapy (inspired by psychoanalytical thought) and writing for literary purposes. Their techniques overlap more and more, inspire each other and thus bear the fruit of new methods to stimulate one’s creativity. Creative writing can be aimed at private purposes (f.e. to leave behind a symbolic legacy for one’s descendants) or can be aimed at the public – the chosen method depends on the goal. The author of the text presents the manuals’ most interesting advises on the motivation for writing, the best conditions for creative work, techniques of non-linear writing, the stimulation of private memories, narrative techniques and questions of style and language. The author also points to the existential aspect of autobiographical writing – it deepens one’s experience of life.
