Kodeks Prawa Kanonicznego z 1983 r. zawiera liczne dyspozycje dotyczące godziwego utrzymania duchownych. Godziwe utrzymanie powinno pozwolić duchownym zaspokoić potrzeby własnego życia. Przez pojęcie „konieczności” należy uważać zarówno necessitas naturae (dobra doczesne, bez których człowiek nie może się utrzymać), jak i necessitas personae (dobra, bez których osoba ludzka może żyć, jednak nie w sposób godny). Godziwe utrzymanie zawiera w sobie zatem wszystko to, co z moralnego punktu widzenia jest potrzebne duchownemu do właściwego realizowania powołania kapłańskiego: wyżywienie, mieszkanie, ubranie, opiekę zdrowotną, zabezpieczenie społeczne, coroczne wakacje, pomoc rodzicom czy najbliższym członkom rodziny, wynagrodzenie tych, z pomocy których się korzysta czy dalszy rozwój intelektualny. W kwestii wysokości utrzymania, ustawodawca kodeksowy ustanawia ogólną zasadę, zgodnie z którą ma być ono „odpowiednie” względem pozycji duchownego, którą zajmuje, oraz dwa czynniki, które pozwalają precyzyjnie określić tę „odpowiedniość”, a mianowicie: uwzględnienie natury powierzonych zadań oraz dostosowanie wysokości wynagrodzenia do okoliczności miejsca i czasu.

The 1983 Code of Canon Law contains numerous instructions for the decent support of clergy. Decent support should be such, that it provides for the necessities of the clerics life. The concept of „necessity” should be understood both as necessitas naturae (the temporal goods without which man cannot sustain himself) as well as necessitas personae (goods without which the human person can live but not in a dignified way). Decent support includes everything that is morally necessary for the priest to properly carry out his priestly vocation: food, shelter, clothing, health care, social welfare, annual holidays, aiding parents or immediate family members, giving payment for assistance or further intellectual development. Concerning the issue of the cost of support, the code legislator sets out the general principle that it is to be „appropriate” for the clerical position he is in, and the two factors that make it possible to determine more precisely this „appropriateness”, namely: taking into account the nature of the tasks entrusted and the adjustment of the cost of remuneration to the circumstances of place and time.

Die Globalisierung öffnet die Märkte, ermöglicht den Handel, Durchfluss von Kapital und den Technologieaustausch, sowie den Austausch von Fachmännern. Sie macht offen für die Hilfe und ohne Ausbeutungswillen könnte sie − mit bedeutender Hilfe seitens der hochentwickelten Länder − der Armut in den Ländern des Südens Einhalt gebieten. Die Wirklichkeit ist anders. Die Globalisierung bringt keinen zu erwartenden Nutzen sondern sie fördert die Entwicklung des Drogenhandels und des Terrorismus. Zufluss von Investitionen, von Kapital und von Technologie in den armen Ländern hängt davon ab, ob man zahlreiche Reformen und wirtschaftlich-politische Änderungen einführen wird. Die Anforderungen, die man an die armen Länder stellt, gehen oft über ihre Möglichkeiten hinaus und sie helfen ihnen nicht, sondern vertiefen noch ihre Armut.
