Artykuł dotyczy hikikomori, które jest zjawiskiem azjatyckim. Jest to forma wycofania społecznego, opisana w Japonii, która występuje u młodzieży i młodych dorosłych, którzy stają się domownikami w domach rodziców, niezdolnymi do uczęszczania do pracy lub do szkoły, przez miesiące lub lata. Część badanych przypadków, osób wycofanych z relacji społecznych, nie spełnia kryteriów istniejącego zaburzenia psychicznego. Ponadto niniejszy artykuł opisuje niektóre cechy hikikomori, jak również pochodzenie zjawiska. Hikikomori można uznać za zespół związany z kontekstem kulturowym, zasługuje na dalsze badania nad tym, czy można je uznać za nowe zaburzenie psychiczne.

A form of severe social withdrawal, called hikikomori, has been frequently described in Japan and it refers to a phenomenon of adolescents and young adults becoming recluses in their parents’ homes, unable to work or go to school for months or years. However, a notable subset of cases with substantial psychopathology do not meet the criteria for any existing psychiatric disorder. This article concerns hikikomori, which is an Asian phenomenon. It discusses this issue from different angles. In addition, this paper describes certain features of hikikomori as well as the phenomenon’s origin. I suggest that hikikomori may be considered as a culture-bound syndrome and it is worth conducting further research to find out whether it meets the accepted criteria as a new psychiatric disorder.

This paper attempts to provide an overview of new motifs, protagonists and concepts in literary works conceived as aesthetic representations of various models of social withdrawal and isolation. To illuminate the social context, sustainable lifestyles and trends that emerged at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries (homing, cocooning, hikikomori syndrome) were used and interpreted as counter-designs to the social changes brought about by globalisation and digitalisation.

W artykule podjęto próbę dokonania przeglądu nowych motywów, bohaterów i koncepcji w utworach literackich pomyślanych jako estetyczne reprezentacje różnych modeli społecznego wycofania się i izolacji. Celem naświetlenia kontekstu społecznego zostały przedstawione style życia i trendy, które pojawiły się na przełomie XX i XXI wieku (homing, cocooning, syndrom hikikomori) i interpretowane są jako kontrprojekty wobec zmian społecznych wywołanych przez globalizację i cyfryzację.

Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht einen Überblick über neue Motive, Protagonisten und Konzepte literarischer Werke zu geben, die als ästhetische Repräsentationen verschiedener Modelle des sozialen Rückzugs und der Isolation konzipiert sind. Zur Beleuchtung des gesellschaftlichen Kontextes wurden nachhaltige Lebensstile und Trends herangezogen, die um die Wende des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts entstanden sind (homing, cocooning, Hikikomori-Syndrom) und als Gegenentwürfe zu den durch Globalisierung und Digitalisierung hervorgerufenen gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen gedeutet werden.
