The factors that influence the perceptibility of Free Indirect Speech

The aim of the article consists of defining the indices of Free Indirect Speech on a lexical level which detect it in the body of a text as a distinguished type of represented discourse. The lexico-semantic peculiarities of Free Indirect Speech are analysed in fiction, in particular, in the genre of short story. Throughout, the illustrations are drawn from W.S. Maugham's short story "Outstation". It is typical of the writer to give a detailed description of the narrator himself and the circumstances of the narration. The narrator penetrates into characters minds, explores their thoughts. Such a manner of narration brings about numerous examples of FIS. The examination of the lexical peculiarities of FIS verifies the notion of FIS as a peculiar type of discourse; it is an authentic style that serves to convey the message in its special way.

Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu zapożyczania angloamerykańskich interiekcji yes i wow przez język polski i rosyjski. Na podstawie analizy definicji słownikowych, obserwacji autentycznych sytuacji z użyciem tych interiekcji oraz przeprowadzonych ankiet zaproponowana została eksplikacja ich znaczenia i opis scenariusza poprzedzającego ich użycie w ściśle określonych sytuacjach. Wysunięto wniosek o niebagatelnej roli, którą te wykrzykniki odgrywają w procesach przewartościowania rzeczywistości. Ich dołączenie do relatywnie zamkniętej grupy słowiańskich interiekcji prymarnych posiada ogromne znaczenie, stanowi bowiem naturalną podstawę do kształtowania prawidłowych odruchów: konsumpcyjnego i indywidualistycznego.

The article deals with the problem of borrowed Anglo-American interjections wow and yes in contemporary Polish and Russian languages. On the base of dictionary definitions analysis, authentic situations observations and data received in conducted surveys the explication of these interjections’ meaning and description of eventual scenario of their using is offered. The analysis extends the conclusions of the important role which wow and yes play in the process of axiological remapping of targeted languages. Their proliferation into relatively closed group of Slavic primary interjections is of great importance, as they could serve as natural base for formation of “correct” individual and market instincts.
