The Knights Hospitallers also known as brothers of mercy are a typical hospital order. In Poland they had started their activities in the XVII century and have continued to do so to the present time. They established and ran hospitals where they took care of people of different religions, nationalities and races. Their devoted care of the sick contributed to the development of hospitals and social care in Poland. Brothers of mercy promoted subjective treatment of their patients, respected principles of separation of the sick, specialized and widely used phytotherapy in their medical practice. They introduced basic medical records in their hospitals (records and medical history of patients). Also these days the Knights Hospitallers take care of sick, suffering and socially disadvantaged people in their hospitals. They provide spiritual care and carry out sundry charity works.
