Bug jest rzeką graniczną, w zasadzie nieuregulowaną, dlatego przynosi społeczeństwu szereg korzyści w postaci usług ekosystemowych. Najważniejsze funkcje jakie wypełnia rzeka to: dostarczanie wody pitnej dla aglomeracji warszawskiej oraz zapobieganie powodziom poprzez obecność rozległych obszarów zalewowych i starorzeczy, które naturalnie buforują wezbrania. Najpoważniejszymi zagrożeniami dla realizowanych usług ekosystemowych są emisje ścieków komunalnych i przemysłowych z obszaru Lwowa i Lwowsko-Wołyńskiego Zagłębia Węglowego. Nowym znaczącym problemem są nielegalne połowy ryb. Plany budowy międzynarodowej drogi wodnej E40 są kolejnym potencjalnym zagrożeniem, ponieważ mogą doprowadzić do poważnego naruszenia stosunków wodnych Bugu. Wskazane czynniki mogą nieodwracalnie osłabić homeostazę rzeki i pozbawić ją możliwości realizowania usług ekosystemowych, w tym zaopatrywania Warszawy w wodę pitną za pośrednictwem Zalewu Zegrzyńskiego.

The Bug is a border river, which is practically unregulated, therefore it can give a number of benefits to the society in the form of ecosystem services. The most important roles that it plays include the supply of drinking water to the Warsaw agglomeration and the prevention of floods through the presence of extensive flood plains and oxbow lakes that naturally buffer periodic surges. The most serious threats to implemented ecosystem services are emissions of municipal and industrial sewage from the Lviv city and LvivVolyn Coal Basin. A new significant problem is poaching which leads to massive harvesting fish. Plans to build an international E-40 waterway seem to be really disturbing because it could lead to a serious breach of the Bug's water relations. The above-mentioned threats may irreversibly undermine the river's homeostasis and deprive it of the possibility of implementing ecosystem services, including the supply of drinking water for Warsaw via Zegrzyńskie Lake.
