W Biblii większość metafor i porównań używanych na opisanie Boga Izraela jest rodzaju męskiego (król, wojownik, pasterz, winogrodnik). Dominujący jest jednak obraz Boga jako ojca. W okresie kryzysu babilońskiego (po 587 przed Chr.) pojawia się jednak nowy sposób opisywania charakteru Boga – metafora związana z obrazem matki będąca odpowiedzią na przekonanie, że Bóg „zapominał” (Iz 49,14–15) o przymierzu i swoich dzieciach.

In the Bible, most of metaphors and similes used to describe the attributes of the God of Israel are masculine (king, warrior, shepherd, viticulturist). However, the image of God as father is dominant. During the Babylonian crisis, however, a new way of describing the character of God appears – a metaphor associated with the image of mother, being a response to the belief that God “forgot” (Is 49,14–15) the covenant and his children.
