Judaism has rich symbolism, particularly when it comes to symbolism of grave art or cemetery culture in general. The very word cemetery in Hebrew is referred to as bet Chaim (the house of life), bet kwarot (the house of graves) or bet olam (the house of eternal life). The following article introduces the reader into the main principles of Judaism as well as into funeral traditions and customs. The author emphasizes the role of a cemetery in the life of every Jew and rich symbolism of each of the rite preceding the burial.
