The objective of the paper is to focus on the role of an educational institution (primary school) in contemporary rural community development and the process of local identity and solidarity building based on cultural and natural heritage. The paper presents a case study of the primary school in the village Spissky Hrhov in Eastern Slovakia, a school with a large proportion of Roma students. This village is one of ten villages in Slovakia that have received an award “The Village of the Year”. The primary school in Spissky Hrhov presents an example of an institution that strongly motivates students to learn about global challenges and provides them with many opportunities to foster their interest in local cultural and natural heritage. Among the top priorities identified by the school in the process of education are: strenthening social and environmental awareness of the students and respecting local and regional traditions. The paper demonstrates a number of innovative ways of connecting environment and heritage, used by the school.
