The article shows a picture of the Silesian world of art (visual arts), treated as a part of the Polish artistic field. The authors, using Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, outline the origins and structure of the Silesian subfield and situate it in the national artistic space. The Silesian field of art is divided into two main areas: orthodox (classic art) and heterodox (avant-garde). Theses areas are supported by two forces: the former by the local, political and bureaucratic fields and the latter by the central forces of the national field of art. The analysis is based on research of Silesian contemporary art galleries.

Wbrew potocznym wyobrażeniom tworzenie treści kulturowych, także naukowych (teorii, metod, paradygmatów etc.), osadzone jest w określonych strukturach społecznych. Działania naukowe nie odbywają się w sposób wolny, między egalitarnymi podmiotami, ale podlegają, tak jak inne fenomeny społeczne, mechanizmom monopolizacji oraz społecznej i symbolicznej hierarchizacji. Nie oznacza to jednak, że hierarchie świata naukowego są prostym odbiciem generalnych nierówności społecznych (systemu klas społecznych). W rzeczywistości świat naukowy stanowi relatywnie odrębne uniwersum z własnymi podziałami i specyficznymi zasobami, o które toczy się społeczna gra. Celem artykułu jest odkrycie i wyjaśnienia owych specyficznych nierówności na przykładzie wewnętrznego funkcjonowania polskiego pola filozofii prawa. Pole to, osadzone na przecięciu linii wpływu kilku dyscyplin (prawo, filozofia, socjologia) oraz sił zewnętrznych (rynek usług prawniczych), daje wgląd w szersze procesy, w jakie uwikłana jest nauka, oraz, co za tym idzie, w sposób, w jaki jest ona produkowana. Badanie, oparte na danych prosopograficznych, obejmuje wszystkich naukowców zatrudnionych w katedrach filozofii i/lub teorii prawa polskich uniwersytetów (n = 148). Metodą badawczą jest geometryczna analiza danych. Oprócz wskazania ukrytych strukturalnych nierówności społecznych i symbolicznych między jednostkami analiza ujawnia także rysującą się nieoczywistą hierarchię uniwersytetów oraz jej sens w badanym uniwersum.

Contrary to common sense visions, the production of cultural content, including scientific knowledge (theory, methods, paradigms, etc.) is embedded in specific social structures. Scientific practices do not take place freely between egalitarian agents but, like other social phenomena, are subject to the mechanisms of monopolization as well as social and symbolic hierarchization. This does not mean, however, that the hierarchies of the scientific world are a simple reflection of general social inequalities (social class system). In fact, the scientific world is a relatively separate universe with its own divisions and specific resources for the social game. The aim of the article is to reveal and explain these specific inequalities on the example of the internal functioning of the Polish (sub)field of legal philosophy. This (sub)field, set at the intersection of the impact lines of several disciplines (law, philosophy, sociology) and external forces (the legal professional market), gives an insight into the wider processes in which science is involved and, consequently, how it is produced. The study, based on detailed prosopographical data, includes all scholars employed in departments of philosophical and theory of law at all Polish universities (n = 148). The research method is a geometric data analysis. In addition to indicating the hidden structural social and symbolic inequalities between individuals, the analysis also reveals the non-obvious hierarchy of universities and its meaning in the studied universe.

Artykuł rysuje szerszy kontekst społeczny funkcjonowania socjologii w Polsce. Autorzy odwołują się w tym celu w pierwszej kolejności do metodologii Pierre’a Bourdieu, rekonstruując w ogólnych zarysach pozycję pola socjologicznego w szerszym polu władzy, a także specyficzne cechy tego ostatniego. Należy do nich w ich przekonaniu dominacja kapitału kulturowego nad ekonomicznym i związana z tym hegemonia szeroko rozumianej inteligencji. Ważną cechą polskiego pola władzy jest też jego charakterystyczny dla krajów peryferyjnych podział na część zorientowaną na integrację z globalnym centrum i część stawiającą mu względny, głównie kulturowy, opór. Podział ten przenosi się również wyraźnie na pole socjologiczne, co jest związane z ograniczoną autonomią tego ostatniego i owocuje między innymi znaczącą w Polsce przewagą nurtu socjologii publicznej nad nurtem socjologii krytycznej.

The paper draws a picture of a wider social context of functioning of sociology in Poland. Authors rely primarily on the methodology of Pierre Bourdieu to achieve this aim. In particular they reconstruct the general position of the sociological field in relation to the wider field of power and the specific characteristic of the later. They include, as the authors see them, domination of the cultural capital over the economic capital and the resulting hegemony of the intelligentsia in the field of power. Another important characteristic of the Polish field of power, which seems typical for most peripheral societies, is its division on to one part orientated towards the integration with the global core and its other part challenging the global domination, though, mostly in the cultural sphere. This division is also clearly transmitted into the structure of the sociological field, given its relatively restricted autonomy and results in a strong superiority of public sociology over the weakly developed critical sociology.
