In her analysis of Kazimierz Brandys’s novels the author focuses on war and wartime as experience and “non-experience” in the perspective of Polish heroic myth and anti-civilian paradigm. In Polish culture romantic and heroic paradigm has substantial influence on the form of masculinity. Experience in this article is a metaphor, which includes participation in a war as a soldier. “Non-experience” in this perspective situates men on the margins of heroic culture. It further shows limitations of heroic culture and revises heroic tradition.

Autorka artykułu podejmuje refleksję na temat zmieniających się współcześnie znaczeń starości w jej społecznym wymiarze. Obecny świat, pełen nieustannych przeobrażeń, wpływa nie tylko na pojawiające się nowe sposoby definiowania i przeżywania starości, lecz także na konieczność redefinicji czy odczytania na nowo tych znaczeń, które utraciły już moc wyjaśniania tego zjawiska. Zarówno proces starzenia się jednostki, jak i fenomen starości ulegają licznym przemianom na poziomie jednostkowym, a także społecznym. Starość jako ostatnia faza w cyklu życia jednostki jest dalece zindywidualizowaną kumulacją procesów zmian biologicznych, psychicznych i społecznych oddziałujących na człowieka, która potęguje zróżnicowaną naturę tego etapu życia. Kontekst ponowoczesności oraz dynamiczny charakter przemian demograficznych przynoszą także nowe realia umocowania starości w rozumieniu jej społecznego definiowania i interpretowania. Celem artykułu jest przede wszystkim zwrócenie uwagi na fakt, że pojmowanie dzisiejszej starości jako zjawiska społecznego ulega licznym reinterpretacjom oraz wskazanie wybranych kontekstów społecznych, w obrębie których stają się one zauważalne i symptomatyczne. Ponadto autorka porusza kwestię odzwierciedlania tych zmian w społecznej tożsamości osób starszych, poprzez którą określają się wobec rzeczywistości społecznej jako zbiorowość wyróżniona ze względu na wiek. Poniższe rozważania ujęto w perspektywie socjologii starości, której wkład może mieć szczególne znaczenie dla zrozumienia starzejących się społeczeństw i być odpowiedzią na związane z tym wyzwania.

This article reflects on the changing meanings of old age in its social dimension. The current world, a whole of constant transformations, affects not only the emerging new ways of defining and experiencing old age but also the need to redefine or reread those meanings that have already lost their power to explain this phenomenon. Both the process of individual aging and the phenomenon of old age are subject to numerous transformations at the individual and social levels. Old age, as the last phase in the life cycle of an individual, is a highly individualized accumulation of biological, psychological, and social change processes affecting humans, which amplifies the diverse nature of this stage of life. The context of post-modernity and the dynamic nature of demographic change also bring new realities to anchoring old age in terms of its social definition and interpretation. The article aims first and foremost to draw attention to the fact that the understanding of old age as a social phenomenon today is subject to numerous reinterpretations and to indicate selected social contexts within which they become noticeable and symptomatic. Furthermore, the text addresses how these changes are reflected in the social identity of older people, through which they define themselves vis-à-vis social reality as a collectivity distinguished by age. The following discussion is framed within the perspective of the sociology of old age, whose contributions may be particularly relevant to understanding aging societies and responding to the challenges involved.
