There are still ongoing debates about the significance and the value of Divan literature. It is often accused of being out of touch with reality and detached from socially relevant issues. Its complex language if often incomprehensible. The counterargument to the above hypotheses is the “localization” (Tur. mahallileşme). This term, in its most general definition, means the penetration of local elements into poetry. The present article aims to show how the features of the mahallileşme are manifested in the poetry of Nedim, who is considered one of the most prominent representatives of this trend.
