Evaluating documentation is crucial for the process of creating sources for scientific studies. The paper discusses the clash between the needs of administration and the expectations of researchers regarding the assessment of documents’ archival value conducted by state archives. It demonstrates two approaches towards evaluating documentation resulting from its usefulness for scientific or practical applications, as well as difficulties concerning the selection of archival materials. It also proposes a role for archive supervisors in the evaluation process, which should balance the needs of science and those of administration.

Wartościowanie dokumentacji jest istotnym procesem mającym wpływ na tworzenie źródeł do badań naukowych. Artykuł omawia zderzenie potrzeb administracji i oczekiwań nauki na gruncie oceny wartości archiwalnej dokumentacji przeprowadzanej przez archiwa państwowe. Pokazano w nim dwa podejścia do oceny wartości dokumentacji wynikające z jej przydatności do celów użytkowych lub naukowych, a także trudności przy przeprowadzaniu selekcji materiałów archiwalnych. Przedstawiono także postulaty w zakresie roli pracownika nadzoru archiwalnego w procesie wartościowania, mające na celu pogodzenie interesów nauki i potrzeb urzędowych.
