Goal of this article is to present activity of Judishe Ordnungsdienst, occupied by the Germans, Krakow in years 1940-1945. Within the scope there is organisation of OD in Jewish district of Kazimierz in 1940, in Krakow ghetto in 1941-1943 and in German concentration camp in Plaszow in 1942-1945. Main topic is preceded by analysis of OD history in Polish cities of Warsaw and Lodz, also occupied by the Germans. The other ghettos are used to present general situation of the organisation. It is also mentioned what happened with officers after the war through the prism of Polish law. Trials of OD officers took place on Special Criminal Court in Krakow in 1945-1947. The purpose of this article was also to present the post-war process of former members of the Jüdische Ordnungsdienst (OD) in occupied Krakow with particular regard to the case of David Lieblinga. The trial of accused Liebling, who was a member of the Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst and the Jewish Fighting Organization was held before the Special Criminal Court in Krakow on May 26, 1946. The allegations of collaborations have been rejected by the court.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie działalności Judishe Ordnungsdienst (OD) okupowanego przez Niemców Krakowa w latach 1940-1945. W zakresie tematycznym mieści się organizacja OD w dzielnicy żydowskiej Kazimierz w 1940 r., w getcie krakowskim w latach 1941-1943 oraz w niemieckim obozie koncentracyjnym w Płaszowie w latach 1942-1945. Główny wątek poprzedzony jest analizą historii OD w polskich miastach Warszawie i Łodzi, również okupowanych przez Niemców. Pozostałe getta służą do przedstawienia ogólnej sytuacji organizacji. Opisano również, co działo się z funkcjonariuszami po wojnie przez pryzmat polskiego prawa. Procesy funkcjonariuszy OD toczyły się przed Specjalnym Sądem Karnym w Krakowie w latach 1945-1947. Celem niniejszego artykułu było również przedstawienie powojennego procesu byłych członków Jüdische Ordnungsdienst w okupowanym Krakowie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sprawy Dawida Lieblinga. Proces oskarżonego Lieblinga, który był członkiem Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst i Żydowskiej Organizacji Bojowej, odbył się przed Specjalnym Sądem Karnym w Krakowie 26 maja 1946 roku. Zarzut kolaboracji został przez sąd odrzucony.

The purpose of this article is to present the activities of the Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst [hereafter: OD] in Nazi-occupied Kraków during the years 1940-1945. This period includes OD organizations in Kraków’s Jewish district, Kazimierz, in 1940, in the Kraków ghetto in 1941- 1943 and in the German concentration camp at Płaszów in 1942-1945. Rounding off these topics is a paragraph touching on the post-war fate of OD officers under Polish law. Trials of OD members were held before the Special Criminal Court [hereafter: SCC] in Kraków in 1945-1947. In discussing the issue, the author has sought to explain the reasons for which Jews joined the OD in light of the moral dilemmas facing OD members. The problems raised in this article are also an attempt to understand the role of the OD in the implementation of the German government’s policy towards the Jews in the years 1940-1945, i.e. for the duration of the Jewish formation’s existence. Holocaust studies lacks sufficient research on the history of the OD in Krakow, and it is therefore very important to fill this gap in the literature.2 In German-occupied Poland, several terms referring to the Jewish police were used interchangeably. In printed and archival sources, the organization is often called Ordnungsdienst, OD, Jewish Order Service (literal translation from German), Order Service, or, simply, the Jewish police. Its members are commonly called odemani [translation: OD-men] or Jewish policemen.
