The aim of the paper is to analyze semantic and word -formation categories of words located in deriva-tional nests constituted by names of plants and animals. The result of the analysis is the construction of abstract derivational paradigms of words located at the first and second tact. The research has shown that both paradigms are similar: they are composed of nominal parts of speech (nouns and adjectives only), and they include 11 and 12 categories, respectively. Both analyzed groups are specific due to sev-eral serial structures (e.g. names of male and female or young specimens, other botanical and zoological names, relation adjectives) and because of extended homogeneity of derivative types.
