The text takes on a dimension which relates directly to the life of inhabitants of the old Poland. It describes the following issues in detail: 1. Tradition and patterns of a Christian prayer 2. Definition and meaning of a devout act in the tradition of selected writings of theologians from the 17th century in Poland 3. Different forms of prayerful activity and practices in the religious life of the 17th century in Poland 4. An example of understanding the need and value of a prayer in the daily life: personal, family and social life in the tradition of selected pieces of baroque literature 5. The most popular prayer intentions in the customs of our ancestors.
The author examines the Marian symbolism in the Polish mediaeval and baroque texts. The article presents fragments of works in which one can find: the symbols from the Bible (such as Noah’s Ark, Eden), astronomical symbols (for example, sun, moon, dawn), floral motifs (such as flowers: rose, lily), and objects (such as a fortress, book or shield). The author reveals an ancient roots and durability of the basic meanings of religious symbols.
The text presents the most common rites of the above mentioned period. The article is divided into four essential parts, namely: 1) a town in the face of threats, 2) Marian piety in a town, 3) Religious festivals in a town, 4) Pious foundations and confraternities in the town. Excerpts from texts of varied composition, subjects and literary value are an illustration of particular problems. The literary images the author refers to show church events which were important for the Old Polish society. They are indirect evidence that the Old Polish religious ritual with its whole diversity of common piety forms had a clear positive aspect, uniting the whole society in terms of a practiced and cultivated system of values.
