W artykule omówiono wystąpienia nazw własnych w strukturze listu jako gatunku tekstu z uwzględnieniem aspektów wyznaczających genologiczną tożsamość familijnego tekstu epistolarnego. Wskazano zatem onimy występujące w ramie i w części właściwej listów, opisano propria znamienne dla potocznej odmiany języka, lecz z wyraźnie zaznaczonymi cechami idiolektu Witkacego. Zwrócono także uwagę na nazwy włączone w struktury implikujące dialogowość tekstu monologowego czy profilujące adresata oraz na onimy o wymiarze dokumentalno-faktograficznym.

In the article the occurrence of proper names in the letter structure, conceived as a genre of text, taking into consideration aspects that determine the genelogical identity of the family epistolary text, is being discussed. So the onyms that occur in opening and closing phrases and in the bodies of letters were shown and the propria characteristic of the colloquial variant of the language, but with clearly marked features of Witkacy’s idiolect, were described. Attention was also paid to the names included in the structures that imply dialogicality of the monologue text or that profile the recipient as well as to the onyms in the documentary and factual dimension.

The aim of this article is to continue the discussion on issues related to onomastic terminology, the necessity of its harmonization and normalization (concept → term). An approximate stock of anthroponomastic terms, as well as the preliminary concept of a dictionary development of terms, were indicated as part of the project “Polish onomastic terminology”. In selected examples, synonymy, the variation of terms, the coexistence of native and foreign forms (usually adapted from Greek or Latin), the rationality of new terms, doublets with a grammatical number are shown in the context of current tradition and research practice. Attention was drawn to the need to indicate, in the planned terminological dictionary, the preferred, acceptable and non-recommended terms, limiting the variants, and justifying the new terms with the need for use.

Celem artykułu jest kontynuacja dyskusji nad kwestiami związanymi z terminologią onomastyczną, koniecznością jej harmonizacji i normalizacji (pojęcie → termin). Wskazany został przybliżony zasób terminów antroponomastycznych oraz wstępna koncepcja słownikowego opracowania terminów w ramach projektu „Polska terminologia onomastyczna”. Na wybranych przykładach pokazano w kontekście dotychczasowej tradycji i praktyki badawczej synonimię, wariantywność jednostek terminologicznych, współwystępowanie form rodzimych i obcych (zwykle adaptowanych greckich lub łacińskich), racjonalność nowych terminów, dublety z liczbą gramatyczną. Zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę wskazania w planowanym słowniku terminologicznym terminów preferowanych, dopuszczalnych i niezalecanych, ograniczenia wariantów, uzasadnienia nowych terminów potrzebą użycia.

The article outlines the most important goals and objectives of the “Internet dictionary of surnames in Poland” (ISNP), emphasizing its role in disseminating surname knowledge. It delineates the components comprising the structure of the entry article and presents plans to expand the anthroponomasticon by incorporating additional surnames based on their diminishing frequency of use. However, attention was paid primarily to the public reception of the dictionary, presenting statistical insights into user activity, discussing the issues raised in correspondence (e-mails) directed to the author’s team, as well as the significant media interest in the dictionary of surnames.

The article is devoted to Polish deanthroponymic oikonyms created from the name Stanisław and its derivatives. The aim of the paper was to show the frequency of one of the most popular male names and its numerous derivative forms in place names, both the oldest ones, created by the end of the 16 th century, and newer ones, created later in the 18 th century, and especially in the 19 th and in the first half of the 20 th centuries. The name Stanisław was the basis of few (approx. 10) toponyms (patronymic with the suffix -ice, possessive with -j-, -ów, -owo) included in the oldest naming layer. Many more medieval oikonyms (about 30) have as their basis the derivatives of the name Stanisław (Stan/Stań, Staniek, Stańko, Stasz(o), Staś, Stanisz, Stachel, Stanięta, *Stanom(a), *Stanim(a), *Staniątek). These are possessive names with suffixes -ew, -ewo, -ów, -owo, -owa, -in, -ówka, patronymic names ending with -owice, -ewice, -ęta and plural names Stany, Staniątki. The 18 th century bestowals refer to 9 place names from the name Stanisław and about 9 from its derivatives, while approx. 70 oikonyms with a full name in the base and approx. 20 toponyms motivated by shortened form of compound name come from the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Many of names are certainly related to the cult of St. Stanislaus. Among them there are also names commemorating King Stanisław August Poniatowski and founders of settlements. Over a dozen toponyms were officially introduced after 1945 to replace German or Germanized names with Polish ones.

The aim of the article is to bring closer a part of the world’s image that is characteristic for the rural community and the richness and variety of the folk culture inscribed in the proprial structures. As a result, this subject requires an integration of different research methods elaborated within the fields of onomastics and dialectology, including linguistic methods of researching a lingual image of the world. The onymic material is as follows: appellative surnames, originating from nicknames formed from dialectal lexemes, surnames motivated by nominal, dialectal hypocorisms, and finally, surnames formed from matronymic phrases (female names), which are an example of an aberrance of the patriarchal family model. Phonetic and formative phenomena should also be focused upon. These are crucial for certain social micro-communities, and are inscribed in the dialectal inflexions of anthroponyms (which function as separate surnames) and marginally in the female surnames with dialectal formants. Onyms with dialectal motivation refer to, and indirectly point, to the contemporary user, the past realities of living in the village community and the lingual and cultural background.

The article discusses basic issues related to Polish anthroponomastic terms, their development and frequency, taking into account the variability of terminological units and the co-existence of native and foreign forms (usually Greek or Latin). It presents problems related to defining a term, determining its scope or (in particular cases) status, indicating preferred, permissible or non-recommend- ed variant forms, selection (reduction) of sub-terms, the existence of doublets with a grammatical number, acceptance or rejection of new terms, etc. In the text, among others, the following sources were used: the dictionary “Osnoven sistem i terminologija na slovenskata onomastika” [“Basic system and terminology of Slavic onomastics”] (1983), an article by Mieczysław Karaś “W sprawie polskiej terminologii onomastycznej” [“On Polish onomastic terminology”] (1968), studies by Henryk Górnowicz (1988) and Ewa Jakus-Borkowa (1987), encyclopedia “Polskie nazwy własne” [“Polish proper names”] (1998), the compendium “Słowiańska onomastyka” [“Slavic onomastics”] (2002–2003) and selected articles published in the journal “Onomastica”.The second part of the article presents the history, scope and definitions of the term ethnonym // ethnic name (based on selected compendia, monographs and contributory studies), paying atten- tion to the types of names it covers. In addition, a preliminary structure of an entry in the terminological dictionary has been outlined, including such elements as: the term, its definition, variability // equivalent term, origin // explanation, its English equivalent, examples // usage, context of use, and additional aspects.

The article demonstrates the chronological continuity of the two-component name Cz(ś)cibor and its variants in the Polish language, as well as their productivity in surname and geographical name creation. The frequency, geography, and structure of proper names (anthroponyms and name-derived toponyms), and in the case of oikonyms, renominations, were taken into account. The anthroponymic and toponymic material quoted in the article indirectly points at the geography of the name variant Cibor, which has to be considered a typically Mazovian form. The oldest medieval oikonyms created from the derivatives of the name Cz(ś)cibor mainly identify objects located in the northern part of the historical Mazovia and in Silesia. In Mazovia, ancestral names with the phonetic variant Cibor as their base are more numerous, while in the southern regions we note patronymic names based on the onym Ścibor.

The subject of the article is names of Polish bookstores and the ever more popular book clubs located in dozens of urban centers. The description presented of booksellers’ chrematonyms includes nomination strategies as well as morphological and syntactic structure of the chosen group of names. An interesting aspect of the considerations is, among others, a comparison of traditional bookstore names with the names of so-called “coffee-shops with books” and Internet bookstores in the context of onymy of other objects in the urban space. Indication of the etymology of the names and their grammatical structure leads to reflections on the degree of preservation of tradition, nominational-derivational schematization within so-called usable chrematonymy, and the drive to onymic modernity and originality.

The aim of the article is to present selected Slavic compound names, including first names reconstructed from toponyms, which are the basis of the oldest place names (i.e. recorded in the Medieval documents). The paper announces a broader research project which aims to present an overall perspective of the anthroponymic motivation of geographical names from onomastic-linguistic, historical, demographic-migratory, geographical and frequency-based aspects. This study will focus upon a variety of topics, such as: chronology, frequency, geography of the name-based toponyms, their onomastic variants and morphological structure. Moreover, the following issues will be indicated: resources and the spread of the naming structures, the survivability and productivity of certain name groups in the toponymic nomination process. Cultural, ideological, religious and social causes which favor the production of certain types of names, including compound names, will be indicated.

The subject of the article is a description of names of marketplaces in three cities of Poland (Kraków, Warszawa, and Rzeszów) in a historic-comparative formulation. A study of means of nomination and structure of the selected group of proper names in synchronic and diachronic aspect, with consideration of different transportation situations, historical factors, topography, and size of the agglomeration in question, indicates quantitative differences and a somewhat dissimilar repertoire of names in individual centers along with preservation of a similar onymic model. The names of marketplaces reflecting the specificity of a given city are described simultaneously with universalistic tendencies in urbanonymy.

The aim of this article is to outline a planned, large-scale, interdisciplinary research project of Cracow’s urban onymy. The accepted methodology for the diachronic and synchronic description and interpretation of urban names takes into account linguistic, sociological, historic and anthropo- logical perspectives. This methodology will allow this category of proper names to be regarded as a social communicative tool, as well as a cultural heritage preserving the history of the city, and the memory of its inhabitants. It will also be seen as a source that documents the geographic-topograph- ical past of the city, and/or the human activity within the economic and culture-created sphere. The more complex elaboration on Cracow urbanonymy in the form of a monograph and an electronic dictionary consisting of legal, semi-legal and colloquial names, aims to illustrate and preserve the history and traditions of the centuries-old and multicultural city. Its purpose is to show the stability, changeability, variability and decline of proper names, as well as their growth. The sociological outlook additionally emphasizes the role of nomina propria in the acquirement of space and orientation in Cracow, as well as in the search for, or construction of, individual or collective identities among the inhabitants of large agglomerations.

ON proprial structures and namecreationally processes — FROM CLASSICAL FORMULATIONS TO THE LATEST THEORIES The goal of the article is to sketch the lines of development in the formulation of derivation in onomastics, at the same time showing the deep evolution that has occurred in this area of onymic study. An overview of changing theories and study methodologies, implying different views on the creation, structure, and function of proper names, demonstrates the development of onomastic thought from formulations more strongly emphasizing the formal or semantic aspect to considerations that formulate proper names as separate textual and semiotic structures on the motivational and communicative level. Innovative and completely original paths of onomastic research are laid out in monographs published in 2013 by Urszula Bijak, Andrzej Sieradzki, and Małgorzata Rutkiewicz-Hanczewska, dedicated to categorical or comprehensive descriptions of proper names.

In light of the publication of the last volume of the onomasticon “Polish Anthroponymy of 16th–18th Century”, the authors reflect on the inspiration for the dictionary. They highlight the role of Professor Aleksandra Cieślikowa in shaping the concept of the volume and present stages of its creation and publication, as well as indicating the importance of describing anthroponymic phenomena in a historical and sociocultural context. The authors discuss the structure of each entry and of the whole dictionary and the sources used. The uniqueness of the onomasticon, owing to the variety of textual data referred to in the dictionary, is emphasised. The authors believe that “Polish Anthroponymy” may be a good starting point for further syntheses for other researchers.
