Antonina Kłoskowska, publishing in “Mass Culture” in 1964, not only presented her approach to those types of cultural manifestations, but also elaborated the basic set of instruments for their analysis. In the author’s specification of the concept of culture as a specific area of scientific research, she took special inspiration from the field of semiotics. Over time, semiotic issues and questions became the focus of her considerations as she defined her own field of interest in the sociology of culture. She encapsulated her research interests in “The Sociology of Culture” in 1981. Her postulates from this article later became the focal point for her work in the 1990s. While it’s true that questions concerning semiotics per se were not the main focus of these studies, her texts resonate in a surprisingly way with propositions rooted in the field of semiotics, resulting in the development of her unique approach based on semioethics. Thus not only do the author’s postulates represent a contemporary challenge, but they also constitute a source of inspiration for a new generation of readers.

The author addresses Marco De Marinis’ recent proposal for theatrology. Using the proposal as a point of departure he loosely traces the presence, and often rather the absence, of two important concepts, rhythm and montage, in research analyses. His findings indicate a need for theatrology to draw closer to analyses in the field of theatre anthropology, as understood by Eugenio Barba. One of the possible paths for proceeding requires rethinking the position of the spectator/theatrologist within the theatrical fact and widening the perspective of theatre anthropology.

The number of texts dealing with the reception of art has been growing significantly in recent years. The reading of reviews or critical texts may be of great importance for shaping individual acts of reception. An attempt was made in this article to compile a list of possible „roles” of the critic (approaches) form the receiver’s perspective. Such a list built on the basis of intuition and observation, may be helpful to some extent in future studies on the social functioning of criticism.

The phenomenon of publication, in the same year, of two books having identical titles, is enough to study the theory presented therein. Both books feature the notion of culture, which was broadly elaborated by both authors: Antonina Kłoskowska and Raymond Williams already in their earlier analyses. It turns out, however, that no matter the title of a book interesting to us, culture is tackled differently in both of them. Williams seems to keep using anthropological definition of culture, while Kłoskowska suggests sociological approach. A reflection on culture by the English academic has shaped the character of British cultural studies and their subsequent follow-ups around the world. A question arises, to what extent the sociological approach by Kłoskowska may give impetus to cultural research in Poland, especially when symbolic culture appears beyond the principle of autotelism.

The presented text is an attempt to introduce the study of the reception of certain concepts borrowed from phenomenological sociology. For this purpose 128 „protocols of reception” were analyzed, and two styles of reception were distinguished (M. Głowiński). The first one was defined as a non-literary reception style, and the second one as the opposing was called a literary reception style. Moreover some characteristic ways of listening were distinguished within each of this two styles. Initially, a reference was made in the analysis to the concept of musical competence in its semiotic sense (G. Stefani). However, at a certain moment it appeared that it would be useful to refer to the perspective of phenomenological sociology, which seaks to explicate social rules of common sense knowledge. As emotional experiencing of music was clearly visible in all protocols an important role could be played by determining the „methods” of ascribing emotional characteristics and showing how emotions are generated. In this way, a semiotic perception of competence should be enriched by new theoretical - analytical dimensions.
