THE ARTICLE DEALS with patterns of coalition formation, which are presented in the background of the parliamentary election results, as the political composition of the National Council (Narodna Rada) plays the dominant role in the process of government creation. The article focuses on political parties and their bargaining behaviour, which tends to be the most important factor in coalition politics. Meciarismus vs. antimeciarismus cleavage, essential in the first years after acquiring independence, is slowly being replaced by an emerging economic (left-right) division, though it’s role in analyzing government bargaining is still limited. The article also discusses types of coalitions formed in Slovakia since 1992 and seeks to explain their ideological profiles.
