The General Archive of the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of the Infant Jesus was founded by the decision of the general council on 8 January 2002 and is under mother superior’s authority. Since 2017, this archive has gathered documentation coming from the years 1921-1990 which was produced by the general office, the offices of individual religious houses, other institutions the Carmelites established and the records of the general economist’s office. In addition, the archive accepts the archival records of the houses which were liquidated and the personal files of the sisters (dead ones). The General Archive of the Congregation does not have any regulations, statuses or archival instructions yet, but it performs its fundamental tasks: gathering, storing, describing, arranging and preserving archival materials. Referring to the Carmelite legislation, the following article presents the history of the documentation produced by the offices mentioned above. In addition, the paper examines the history of the general archive and its structure. Since the constitution of the institute does not mention the place where the documents were produced, the text says about the general office and the office of a religious house. These names are based on the office formulas prepared in 1991 by a secretary general for the general office, the provincial office and the office of a religious house.
