The article discusses the topic of compensatory and compulsive shopping, also called in the literature pathological shopping or shopaholism. The authors attempt to answer four research questions: – are youth and young adults more bent on compensatory and compulsive shopping compared to the general population? – has there been, compared to 2010, an increase in the rate of people aged 18-29 characterized by the propensity for compensatory and compulsive shopping? – to what extent, variables like sex, age and household income diversify the propensity for compensatory and compulsive shopping? – to what extent, relations with independent variables noticed in 2010 reoccur in the second round of the study, i.e. in 2016? Measuring the propensity for compensatory and compulsive shopping was carried out on the basis of German Compulsive Buying Indicator. The presented results stem from two studies conducted in 2010 and 2016 on a representative sample of 1000 Poles aged 15 and over. The data were gathered using the face-to-face interview technique.

Pursuant to the concept developed by Helmut Klages, five types of morality characteristic for contemporary societies with developed economic structures may be distinguished: conventional, realistic, idealistic, hedonistic-materialistic morality and morality of the resigned. In compliance with the thesis of this paper, the latter two types of morality should be significantly connected with irrational consumer behaviours – demonstrative consumption, compensative consumption and shopaholism. As our research conducted throughout Poland in August 2010 demonstrated, approximately 1/5 of Poles aged 15 and more are included in the segments of hedonisticmaterialistic morality and of morality of the resigned. As expected, the highest percentage of compensative shoppers was found in the segment of hedonistic materialists – 1/3 of them buy compensatively, whereas 1/3 of hedonistic materialists buying compensatively demonstrate inclinations to shopaholism. The idealists constitute the second most susceptible to compensation segment. Moreover, this segment leads as well in terms of demonstrative consumer behaviours.
