The article begins with establishing the cultural context for the threats facing civilisation relating to war and their media portrayal. The rhetoric of peace employed for war narratives hinders a potential understanding of the problems experienced by local communities in the war afflicted areas. The next section of the paper considers problems of the ‘slithering war’ – spreading and fighting terrorism and the trivialisation of threats in the media. The final part discusses the rhetoric of peace in the context of the everyday media reality.

This article shows changes in visual narratives of disasters related to the element of water, with narratives from the 1990s (documentary series) serving as a starting point. The basic context of the unfolding analysis comes in the form of global problems, primarily environmental ones, brought about by the Anthropocene epoch. Firstly, the context associated with mass media is presented. After that the article moves on to discussing environmental concerns as a megatrend in contemporary culture and theoretical concepts that are critical to our understanding of changes in the media attitude to and media discourse on disasters. Next, the rhetoric of media narratives of the water element is analysed along with changes in documentary narratives presented by the new media. Finally, new challenges are pointed out that come with the Anthropocene epoch.

In this essay case studies pointing to problems related to the use of AI in shaping the virtual world are discussed. AI algorithms helps to shape and control the conventional web behaviour and speech of today’s media users, mostly teenagers and adults. Considering the development of software, social media may constitute a separate virtual world in the future. AI also shapes the image of this world and human relationships. The essay begins with an analysis of the future of social media against the background of truth; later, case studies show problems caused by AI to media users and the community. The authors attempt to answer questions such as: What kind of attitudes and abilities will be shaped in social media? What network ethics does AI dictate? What kind of attitudes and thinking will be promoted in the social media of the future?
