The paper presents an analysis of the Polish lexem ktoś zmyśla coś (untranslatable into English, it means more or less that someone is saying things that are not true but it does not mean that someone is lying). In this paper dictionaries’ definitions of the word zmyślać/zmyślić are revised and confronted with the conclusions resulting from the analysis. The paper also investigates relations between ktoś zmyśla coś and ktoś kłamie (someone is lying) which are frequently found as synonyms. Out of the two forms of the verb: zmyślać 1) (ktoś zmyślił coś) and zmyślać 2) (ktoś zmyślił, że_) the author is only interested in the first one. As the result of the analysis concerning the meaning of ktoś zmyśla coś, a preliminary explication of this expression is presented.
