In recent years, the Omo Valley situated in south-western Ethiopia has been undergoing rural and social reforms. The Ethiopian government and foreign investors have implemented a number of projects that have significantly changed the previous social and ecological balance. The article discusses the issues of building the Gibe III Dam and six sugar factories as well as the seizure of vast areas for new plantations. It also analyses the impact of such decisions on the inhabitants of the region.
