Negative Emotions in the Translation on the Basis of The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens and Its Polish Renditions

The article is devoted to a Polish translation of a famous Ch. Dickens’s Christmas story The Cricket on the Hearth (1845). The article offers a comparative analysis of the source text and its two Polish translations. A special attention was given to negative emotions and feelings, and to the differences in their renditions. The first translation was published in 1954 by M. Feldmanowa-Kreczowska and the second – in 1988 by K. Tarnowska. Translations were published at different times, which had a considerable impact on their poetics and quality. Theoretical aspects of emotional issues are shortly discussed.

Artykuł jest poświęcony analizie komparatystycznej wybranych przykładów z dwóch polskich przekładów jednego z opowiadań wigilijnych Charlesa Dickensa Świerszcz za kominem (The Cricket on the Hearth). Moim celem jest zbadanie różnic w wyrażaniu uczuć i emocji, które są obecne zarówno w tekście wyjściowym, jak i wersjach docelowych, w przekładach dwóch polskich tłumaczek: M. Feldmanowej-Kreczowskiej i K. Tarnowskiej. Przekłady powstały w różnym czasie, co miało wpływ na ich jakość i poetykę. Opracowanie eksponuje te emocje, które są szczególnie obecne i częste w dzisiejszym świecie, jak lęk, ból, bojaźń czy przygnębienie. Omawiając sceny w przekładach, zamierzam się skupić na uwypukleniu różnic wyrażających emocje negatywne.

Italy in perspective of Dickens and the 19th century Polish writers Abstract The paper analyzes the way Italy is presented in Dickens’, Kremer’s and Kraszewski’stravelogues and works. They sometimes construct their image of Italy from differentperspectives applying various types of texts and stylistic devices. Special attention was givento similarities and differences between three images of Italy in the 19th century literature.Theoretical aspects of Grand Tour and Dickens’ travel to Italy are shortly discussed. The article deals with the issue of changes in the translation of emotional expressions and names based on Charles Dickens’ second Christmas book, The Chimes (1844) and its five Polish translations. The official history of the Polish translations begins with an anonymous translation in 1846. The author compares and contrasts two anonymous translations (1846, 1923) with the ones by Maria Kreczowska (1946), Krystyna Tarnowska (1989) and Jerzy Łoziński (2015). The purpose of the article is to present and analyze selected phrases and emotive lexemes naming and expressing feelings observed in the story. In particular, the author focuses on a variety of stylistic procedures affecting the emotionality of the work.

Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu zmian w tłumaczeniu wyrażeń i nazw emocjonalnych na podstawie drugiej książki bożonarodzeniowej Charlesa Dickensa The Chimes (1844) i jej pięciu polskich tłumaczeń. Oficjalnie historia polskich przekładów rozpoczyna się od anonimowego przekładu w 1846 r. Autorka porównuje i kontrastuje dwa anonimowe tłumaczenia (1846, 1923), Marii Kreczowskiej (1946), Krystyny Tarnowskiej (1989) oraz Jerzego Łozińskiego (2015). Celem artykułu jest prezentacja i analiza wybranych zwrotów i leksemów emotywnych nazywających i wyrażających uczucia, które zaobserwowano w opowieści. W szczególności autorka skupia się na różnorodnych zabiegach stylistycznych wpływających na emotywność utworu.
