W dobie intensywnych przemian demograficznych, jakie obserwuje się po wstąpieniu Polski do Unii Europejskiej, również małe miasta dotknęła modernizacja społeczeństwa. Nie są to zmiany tak intensywne jak w największych skupiskach ludności, gdzie zachowania populacji odpowiadają nierzadko drugiemu przejściu demograficznemu, jednakże doświadczają one transformacji. Poddane analizie wybrane małe miasta województwa pomorskiego udowadniają, że procesy ludnościowe w tychże jednostkach administracyjnych ulegają homogenizacji. Problemem jest przede wszystkim szybkie tempo starzenia się społeczeństwa, jak również emigracja mieszkańców w wieku wczesnoprodukcyjnym, będąca przede wszystkim efektem częściowego otwarcia zachodnich rynków pracy dla obywateli państw przyjętych w 2004 roku do Unii Europejskiej.

In the era of intense demographic changes that can be observed after Poland’s accession to the European Union, the modernisation of society is also noticeable in small Polish cities. The transformation process is clearly not as intensive in small cities as it is in the metropolitan areas where the population behaviour mostly corresponds to the second demographic transition. The analysis of the small cities of the Pomeranian Voivodeship that were selected for the purpose of this study shows that the demographic process in these administrative units becomes standardised. The main problem in this case is the rapid population ageing, as well as the increasing migration of young people which is primarily a result of the partial opening of the Western labour markets for citizens of the countries that joined the European Union in 2004.
