Despite some changes for the better in recent years, civic activity levels among Polish youth remain low. This article endeavours to identify and understand the factors contributing to this state of affairs, relying on the results of a study conducted among activists of the Warsaw chapter of the Youth Strike for Climate. The participants took part in qualitative interviews as well as filling out a test comprised of 20 statements. In-depth analysis of their feedback enables discernment of four mental components of key significance in the shaping of civic mindedness, and likewise identification of certain shortcomings in the current civic education model.

Aktywność obywatelska młodych Polaków, mimo pozytywnych zmian w ostatnich latach, wciąż pozostaje na niskim poziomie. Celem artykułu jest próba wyszczególnienia i zrozumienia powodów takiego stanu rzeczy. Analizę czynników rozwoju obywatelskości młodzieży oparto na wynikach badań aktywistów warszawskiego oddziału Młodzieżowego Strajku Klimatycznego. Z badanymi przeprowadzono wywiady jakościowe oraz poproszono ich o wypełnienie testu dwudziestu stwierdzeń. Pogłębiona analiza wyników badań pozwoliła wyróżnić cztery komponenty umysłowe kluczowe dla kształtowania się obywatelskiego sposobu myślenia. W rezultacie ukazano również niedociągnięcia prowadzonej obecnie edukacji obywatelskiej młodzieży, stanowiące przeszkodę w jej rozwoju.

Lonely Citizen Effect: How is Democracy Influenced by the Growing Problem of Loneliness?

The problem of loneliness is spreading across modern societies faster than ever before. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate that this change has negative effects not only on the wellbeing of individuals, but also on the political stability of democratic societies. Loneliness-induced impairments of social cognition make citizens maintain a hostile perception of others and prevent them from looking for truth and participating in reciprocal relationships. Inability to regulate emotions makes them, in turn, prefer affective narratives instead of facts, as well as succumb to manipulations or join unpredictable, deindividuating, totalitarian-like movements. The combination of aforementioned effects may pose a great threat to democratic systems. A suggested way to improve this situation is to fill in the gaps of human emotional instincts and ineffectiveness of welfare institutions, which endorse psychological and physical social isolation. It can be done by using various sorts of innovative applications of modern technologies.

Over the last three decades, social neuroscience, which had emerged as a subdiscipline of cognitive neuroscience at the beginning of 1990s, has been rapidly developing its specific methodology and extending its research scope. By combining knowledge and methodology from social, psychological and biological sciences it is uniquely suited to study human functioning on multiple levels and elucidate the trajectories underlying human social behavior. The current article aims to briefly cover the history of social neuroscience by discussing development of both research and academic structures related to it. Moreover, the research on the association between social isolation and subjective social status, and health is presented as an example of practical application of the interdisciplinary approach adopted by social neuroscience.

Neuronauka społeczna, która narodziła się jako subdyscyplina neuronauki poznawczej na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych XX w., na przestrzeni ostatnich dekad ulegała dynamicznym przemianom. Unikalne połączenie perspektywy nauk społecznych, psychologicznych i biologicznych, jakie oferuje ta dziedzina, umożliwia badanie funkcjonowania człowieka na wielu płaszczyznach, co może prowadzić do głębszego zrozumienia mechanizmów je kształtujących. Niniejsza publikacja ma na celu przybliżenie procesu kształtowania się neuronauki społecznej, zarówno pod kątem rozwoju badań, jak i struktur akademickich z nią związanych. Ponadto zostały przedstawione wyniki dotychczasowych badań z zakresu izolacji społecznej i subiektywnego statusu społecznego oraz wpływ tych czynników na zdrowie publiczne, co stanowi przykład zastosowania interdyscyplinarnego podejścia neuronauki społecznej w praktyce.
