The article constitutes a comparative analysis of Hanna Krall's Wyjątkowo długa linia and Jenny Erpenbeck's Klucz do ogrodu. Introducing the motif of the home, often-exploited in Polish and German literature, both writers infuse the subject with a "fresh" energy of social communication, especially in the field of the so-called historical grand narratives, both writers working within their particular socio-cultural spaces. The analysis of their writings shows that the meaningful topos merely exacerbates the complexity – if not the state of a certain clinch of space – of time and place, and their accumulation, which invariably appears in the newest prose when it enters into close relationship with historicity.

This essay discusses motivations and various strategies of artistic involvement in Polish-German relations on the part of female writers who come from Poland, write from Berlin and represent different generations of writers associated, by way of their biographies, with Germany and Poland (e.g., Brygida Helbig-Mischewski and Emilia Smechowski). Their writings, and modes of public activity that accompany them in both countries (e.g., voicing their positions in mainstream media) are closely related to a pan-European crisis of values triggered by Brexit and its aftermath.

Twórczości te i towarzyszące im aktywności w przestrzeni publicznej w obu krajach (zabieranie głosu w największych mediach) pozostają w ścisłym związku z okołobrexitowym kryzysem wartości w Europie.

The article is dedicated to the debut novel written by Alexandra Tobor who in the late eighties moved with her parents to Germany. Based on the writher’s genuine experiences the novel Sitzen vier Polen in Auto. Teutonische Abenteuer makes up the artistic transformation of girl’s experiences who first months of her stay in Germany spent in a displacement camp. Thereby the novel forms part of the prose written between Poland and Germany where comes out the theme of a displacement camp as topography peculiar to emigration. Narrative perspective adapted by the writer makes one searching in her depicted world for the thing that distinguishes that novel from achievements of Tobor’s predecessors. One of those distinguishing features is the conception of “differentness” that writer perceives in her close surroundings.

Artykuł poświęcony jest debiutanckiej powieści Alexandry Tobor, która pod koniec lat 80. wyjechała z rodzicami do Niemiec. Bazując na autentycznych przeżyciach autorki, powieść Sitzen vier Polen in Auto. Teutonische Abenteuer stanowi artystyczne przetworzenie doświadczeń dziewczynki przebywającej w pierwszych miesiącach pobytu w Niemczech w obozie dla późnych przesiedleńców. Tym samym utwór wpisuje się w zbiór pisanej między Polską a Niemcami prozy tematyzującej motyw obozu jako topografii charakterystycznej dla emigracji. Perspektywa narracyjna przyjęta przez Tobor każe jednak szukać w jej świecie przedstawionym tego, co odróżnia utwór od dokonań poprzedników. Jednym z takich wyróżników jest ujęcie zagadnienia „inności”, którą narratorka powieści dostrzega w najbliższym otoczeniu.

This article investigates the autobiographic character of Polish-German/German-Polish migrant literature. The text refers to recent research in the German language, highlighting differences with approaches prevalent in Polish scholarship. At the same time, the article illustrates how the idea of “contact between neighboring philologies” can be realized in practice.
